Each year, in lieu of getting each other Xmas presents, my brother and I along with our wives have a weekend away together without the kids.

In recent years we have hired a canal boat, hired a boat on the Norfolk Broads, been to Gibraltor, Cologne, Krakow, Prague and Ljubljana.

We do enjoy good food and do like to try the local produce especially the wines and beers but have no interest in clubbing. We are free to travel at any time of the year the only stipulation being that if we fly it has to be from Gatwick.

Eastern Europe seems to be our prefered place but open to any suggestions. I have noticed that Easy Jet are just about to commence flights from Gatwick to Moscow so this is a possibility.

Has anyone got any interesting suggestions?

Iceland is cool, but you won't do it justice for a weekend.

Bruges is pretty good for a weekend- very cute, all old buildings, christmans market, lots of canals, cobbles streets, chocolate shops, and beer taverns with warm open fires.

other than that there are some amazing self catering places around the UK!

I'd recommend San Sebastian every time for a short food/drink related trip away. In the summer you also get two great beaches (one for swimming, one for surfing).

A two day long tapas crawl tasting the delicacies and ciders & wines of the old town would be my idea of a great weekend. Flights to Bilbao or Biarritz.

Tallinn, Wroclaw, Madrid, Budapest all have great food. I've not been since 1967 so it has probably changed a lot, but I have heard Moscow is dreadful.

Varna, Bulgaria looks interesting.

I enjoyed Lisbon, I just got a bit tired of being offered hashish at EVERY pause.

Thanks for the suggestions. Looked at Tallinn and Budapest but then the women decided they wanted to go to Vienna, so Grimsby it is!

You could do a few days in Vienna then cruise down the Danube to Budapest and fly back from there.
