Help getting back on the road

I had a pedestrian walk out on me last week and I've ended up with snapped forks and a bent front wheel (as well as several injuries). Getting a replacement wheel isn't too much trouble but the forks are a funny size - does anyone know where I can get a pair to fit a Boardman Team Carbon 2010 for reasonable money? They are 1 1/2" at the bottom and 1 1/8" at the top.

That's not a 'funny size' - that's a tapered headset. Modern, innit.

Lots of places online, Planet-X do them I think or there are many Chinese carbon suppliers.

erm, aren't broken forks the perfect opportunity to buy a new bike? If you're married you walk into the house and show your Mrs your bike with the front wheel all busted up and some bits of carbon. No way you can ride that.

Then you can get new forks and some new wheels for your team carbon and use it as a winter training bike.

Something like the EC90 from Easton would fit nicely, and be a good upgrade. Coupled with some Easton wheels nice, set-up.

Sadly, I cannot justify spending £300 on a set of forks. I've spotted these on eBay: Linky

My steerer tube length is 220mm so I guess I can cut them down to size - is that acceptable?

My forks have a tapered seat for the bottom bearing that looks like it's pressed on the fork. I guess I'm going to need new bearings - are these the right ones? Link There are two options - 10mm & 15mm. What do these refer to?

I'm a little out of my depth when it comes to fixing bikes so any help is very gratefully received.

The ribble forks look ideal. It's 'tapered steerer' you need to be looking for, and it's not a rare size.

Re the bearings - the bottom bearing seat you can see on your existing forks will Co. E off, and and needs transferring to the new fork.

Have a look if it's split, and or a complete ring - split makes it easier to move over.


The steerer tube - yes its normal to cut it down. Be warned that a carbon steerer will need a fine-tooth saw to cut, alu can be done with a hacksaw or pipe cutter.


If your stuck or unsure, and a bike shop should be reasonable for swapping the forks and headset race over

Thanks for the reply. I emailed Ribble to ask them about the forks and they replied saying they would only sell them with a frame and mysteriously all the forks in my size are now showing out of stock.

You can use any old forks, you just need to swap the headset if you do. You can get taper headset to 1 1/8th conversion headsets. Most bike shops sell them.

I want to get back on the road as cheaply as possible - the conversion sets I've seen run around £60 which when added to a new fork starts to add up.

These forks on eBay in UD gloss finish will match the frame and the dimensions shown on the drawing match my forks fairly well. I know ordering from China can be hit and miss - I don't suppose anyone has bought from this seller in the past?

I managed to get the seat for the bearing off - it wasn't split but a little heat from the blow torch and it came right off.

Well my forks have landed in the UK so hopefully they'll arrive shortly.

I'm going to need a set of wheels too. Any recommendations? I'm prefer to spend about £150 but could stretch the budget.

i have done about 2000 miles on my Fulcrum 7s without them missing a beat, they are bombproof but quite heavy, I think as a pair they were just under 2kgs bare (without casette, skewers etc). I bought them to replace a pair of OEM Ritcheys on my old Boardman and they were noticeably smoother. The Shimano RS10/20s are pretty good too and an ideal alternative.

Forks are here and they look identical to the Boardman ones save for the stickers!

I'm going to order some wheels - what's the difference between the Shimano RS10/20/30? They are all a few quid within each other.
