wedge 280i fuel pump
Discussion
Hi James..Not sure what pressure the fuel is on a 2.9 cossy..With the capri 2.8i the pressure is metered via the fuel metering head and any extra is sent back to the tank..If the pressure is matched to the injectors then it should be ok..If the pressure is too low then there will be starting and performance issues..Too much and it will run rich, Injectors are sensitive to pressures..Ziga
Pumps DO have the number on them, but it's in very small type, and after being in the weather for 20 years.....
I believe any of Capri, Granada, Sierra XR4 pumps should be OK, as long as it's not the 'in-tank' type, which doesn't have the outer 'can'. There are a range of different pumps for the various 'K' jet cars, rated by flow rate. So provided new pump fits, and is for about the same power output, chances are it will be OK. K jets were used a lot in Audi,VW,Mercedes, and even Ferraris, so their pumps will work too (if they fit).
I have Ford part numbers, which I can't verify, but here they are -
Fuel Accumulator Ford 1648512
Fuel Pump Ford 1613157
Fuel Pump Bracket Ford 6123952
Fuel Pump Insulators Ford 1519545
Fuel Filter Ford 6103279, EFG32
Fuel Filter Ford 6058519, EFG22
NB. K jet systems run at high pressure (about 75psi I think), electronic/digital systems run at much lower pressure (about 35psi). So you can use a 'K' pump on a electronic system, but NOT the other way round as it won't generate enough pressure.

James,
My 280i came to me with Bosch pump Number 0 580 254 956. I replaced it with a similar one (different number) from a Mercedes. Internet says replacement number is 0 580 254 910.
Cost here is US$200 - 300. Chinese copy about $50! Some of those "original" Bosch pumps are shipped directly from the factory - in Malaysia!
Wilf.

Looks like I've ordered the wrong pump. The bosch code should be 0580 254 910, this would have been original fit for the original Capri engine and (as far as I can tell) hasn't been changed for the cosworth engine (which would have had an in-tank pump when fitted to a Scorpio). There are no visible numbers on it now so I'm going to guess it's still the original Capri item.
Unlikely to get it fitted for the weekend now so I'll be at the wedge lunch in a very trusty fiat. The runabout I bought off PH for £500 three years ago that never gives any trouble!

That was a few years back! The 2.9 cosworth in didn't last very long before it needed a rebuild (outlived Tower View though) so I had it rebuilt at Austec with a long throw Swaymar spec crank. It needed a T5 box and a custom prop to fit (and handle the extra torque) and has an OMEX ecu but has proven very difficult to set up properly. In some ways I wish I'd kept the old Capri engine, that never gave any trouble!
Two different rolling road readings, different mapping, very different results. Austec's graph showed 240bhp and 280lbs but they had the ecu taking signal from the inlet manifold making low speed response was very poor. At Race Engine Calibration, with a new (working) throttle position sensor and the ecu signal taken from it, and with a full re-map, the graph shows 210bhp and 220lbs. Both figures come in impressively low, and it drives very well at low speed but I'll have to take it on a run to find out just how different it feels. The aim of having a longer throw crank was to bring the torque in earlier - the standard cossie boa feels much like a 2.8 until 4500rpm - and this has certainly been achieved but the power figures aren't as big as I'd expected. Interesting how an extra 400cc has changed the sound though, much deeper.
What might help are a new set of manifolds and exhausts, I had new manifolds made up a few years back and they are a bit restrictive though it looks like a challenge to fit anything broader in there. Standard exhausts are a bit narrow too.
Next job on the list though is a suspension rebuild. The rest will have to wait!

Yup that's it. Have finally sourced a Ford part that looks like the one that's come off. Bit pricey mind. Looks like the original Capri part is also used on the XR3 amount others and has been happily feeding the cossie for a few years so it should continue to. Don't want to confuse the ecu by changing the spec now but it would be easier did have a visible part no!I believe any of Capri, Granada, Sierra XR4 pumps should be OK, as long as it's not the 'in-tank' type, which doesn't have the outer 'can'. NB. The pump on the early Scorpio I found was NOT in the tank, but underneath like the Capri ones... but that was the 12V 2.8 engine (with EEC-IV). I understand there were K pumps for engines up to V12, so there will always be a pump big enough, but probably the price will be big too.....

Where in 'London' are you?
Ive got a spare pump you can use to get you to the weekend meet, Im in the Gravesend Kent area if you want to pop round and pick it up.
Ive also got a spare 280 engine if you ever get the hankering to install a 280 capri engine back in there!!

That could be handy - I wouldn't mind having a spare pump. I'll be at the wedge lunch on Saturday if you're there, whichever car I arrive in!Where in 'London' are you?

AHHHHHHHAAAAAAA, thats why I offered it to you as a 'get you to the dinner' option!!
I always try and keep a bundle of spares to get people out of trouble and moving again, buy I would need it back to return it to the 'spares' pile!
Sorry, I wont be able to make it tomorrow, I cant even get out of bed at the moment, or roll on my front for that matter, let alone drive up to din dins.
