Hiya! I'm new.

Hello there PH'ers, My name is Max, I'm from Newbury. I have some questions.
Well, I'm most likely one of your younger members at 16, and I've been interested in cars all my life. I was wondering, if you could give me some advice on buying my first car relatively soon. Looking at a budget of around 1K. Also need to consider things such as insurance, and not some Beaten old Pug 106 that's been thrashed to hell.
thanks in advance,

There's some Kei stuff.
It'd be a nice option, and something different and unique.

you will without a doubt get your fingers smelly and be down with the kids with this one

fingers smelly with oil obviously

imagine going round the block with your mates on a puusssaaaayyy patrooooolll in one of those bad boys! It's tempting to branch out for something more adventurous for the sake of not having almost exactly the same as everyone else in the younger age bracket. When I was 16 I remember thinking "what's not a granny-mobile, not girly and not going to flush all my social reputation down the sink hole" - It ain't easy
Welcome, I am 17 and looking at buying my first car early next year.
I have had experience of two Mk5 Fiesta's - they are solid little cars and quite nice handling ones. Sadly, they are prone to rust and it can take silly sums to rectify. Apart from that, very decent car and not much money at all nowadays. 1.25 Zetec engine is the best bet in the Mk5
My mate had a K11 Micra WITH colour coded bumpers no less. We nicknamed it the white skip. It took a lot of abuse, and still asked for more - solid car, and costs very little again.
Two very good little cars! If I think of anymore, I will post 'em.

Hiya mate, I know your position. I turned 17 in july 2011, passed my test december 2011 and then bought a car in march 2012. I settled for a 1.3 MK5 fiesta; the 1.3s are rugged little things and equivelent to 1.0 corsas on insurance. Imo out of that gen superminis, mk5 fiestas are the way to go; double wishbone suspension breathed on by richard parry-jones' team mean they handle great, and they are lovely to drive; nice straight legged seating position, amazing steering feel which is perfectly weighted, and a really slick lovely gearbox. I ran that for 6 months then traded it for a mk5 1.25 freestyle which i loved, the 1.25 zetec se engine is really nice and revvy, the only downside is that it is cambelt driven rather than chain ala 1.3 and most cars on the market will need the cambelt doing which is a £150 job. I ran that fiesta for 5000 miles until a week ago where i bought a 1989 volvo 360 with a welded diff, but i wouldnt recommend that as a first car.
Get a mk5 fiesta, theres little if anything else that is that fun to drive at that price and insurance. Watch out for rust on the rear arches, cambelt changes, and check the front suspension as bushes and wishbones are delicate, the price you pay for great handling.
I paid 2300 for my first year of insurance, which was dirt cheap for a 17yr old in london without a black box.
Failing that, 306s are fun albeit flawed steers. I dont know much about them though so someone else should be able to fill you in.
Ps nice to see a jdm fan on here, cant wait to get myself in an s14.

Could be that a classic car would be much cheaper to insure. On another forum I saw this posted recently

When my brother was 18 not too long ago he was quoted several thousand pounds to insure a 1 litre Toyota Yaris, worth less than 1500 quid. Silly.
So he bought a Mini which he's insured for about £300 on a classic policy

Ime nobody does classic car insurance for young drivers anymore
on top of that its even rarer to find one that a) allows it as an only car, b) allows big miles or c) contribubes to NCB. Footman james pulled out of the young driver game last year. I will be very very happy to be proved wrong though.

Thanks for that one...
That's a nice website, I may have to have a dig around. Thanks.
My other, more sensible option, was a MK5 Fiesta. Any thoughts on that?

haha.A Mk5 Fiesta was my first car (I had the Zetec S) and it was brilliant, the 1.25s are also very capable and nippy for a small engined car. Man thing you have to watch for are the rusty arches. And if they aren't rusty around the arches look underneath cause its usually one or the other!
I'm fairly sure there's a 14 year old who has a jag on here somewhere
be inventive, when that doesn't work, try getting a cheap car with a tiny engine, and then putting every old woman that you know who has more that 7 years NCB on as named drivers. Micra's are great cars, i currently have a k12 Micra, and it's leaps and bounds in front of the 2 corsa's i've previously had. Not sporty though, and looks like a hippo as it's grey. Very cheap to insure aswell in 1.0 or 1.2 guise
