Boxter S 987 Ticking/tapping?
Discussion
Hi all, I am looking at buying this 2005 boxter S but am slightly paranoid about the ticking noise it makes after reading the forums.
Would you mind clicking the link below and telling me if you think the ticking is normal or not?

Many thanks for all your help, really appreciated.

Hi mate, I'm on a military computer so can't look at the clip but......if the ticking you're hearing is coming from the right hand side of the engine and can be heard through the vent it's probably just the injector rail operating.
If you stick your head right next to the left hand side vent you can hear it too but at reduced volume due to the baffling in the vent on that side.
I had a 2002 Bosxter that did it and my current 2007 Cayman does it, if you look about on the Planet 9 Cayman / Boxster forum you'll see loads about this.
I had mine looked at when I heard it in the Boxster and the tech confirmed it was just the injector rail, I never had an issue with either car.
Something to be aware of though - a 2005 Boxster may or may not have the stronger and more reliable IMS bearing and housing, 2005 was the change over year and there is no way of checking externally, I'm not scare mongering, it's just something to bear in mind. Anything post 2006 build has the redesigned item and failures are extremely rare.

Without an inspection, I would leave it.
An inspection is always the way forward given how much they cost compared to the investment. The sad fact is that so many people are avoiding the water cooled cars because of the failure hype, they're not the ticking time bombs that some, including high profile Porsche magazines, would have you believe.
Anything 2006 and after that's been well maintained is a good bet, more so if you go for a smaller capacity engine (ask Hartech, they'll bear me out on this one).
There are some beautiful cars out there that are wearing a reputation they simply don't deserve and, due to hysteria and some magazines, the values have taken a real hit.
An inspection is always a good bet - that being said I've had two late model Porsches bought with common sense and personal mechanical knowledge and both have been golden, I might have just been lucky though!?

Having listened to this I have to say I can't hear anything out of the ordinary. I'm not a qualified tech, however, and given the amount of choice currently, if you have any doubts I would walk away.
I'm no expert on Boxsters but I'd be suprised if that ticking is normal.Hopefully Mike (S&C), Henry or Baz/Grant will come along soon to give their expert view.
I've not seen the video but a ticking from the RHS really is normal, it's the injectors but, as previously stated, get an inspection, it's money well spent in the long run but, it won't be able to tell you if the IMS is on it's way out nor will it be able to tell you the exact state of the engine internals, a bore scope will probably be used to inspect the cylinders but that'll be all.
If you're not happy or at all unsure walk, gotta go with your gut as well as your brain.

As others have said, you need to be absolutely sure with these cars and each model has their own peculiar ticks/noises - my ears are finely tuned devices lately for slightly other reasons.
Ticking at starup until at operating temp is fine. Slight tick over your right shoulder (UK) is also normal.

Potentially could be slight exhaust leak at flange on that bank, exhaust nuts etc can just rust away to nothing as good as and the flange can develope a blow... Hard to confirm this without actually hearing and seeing but could be a potential, get it checked out
