Could be bad breath, not keen on eating or eating awkwardly.

Like to know this myself.

Our old setter is very sensitive with his skin. He was scratching his face and we thought it was his ears (prone to bad ears) - but he was scratching just before his ears (he is old and not good at co-ordination).

Turns out the skin of his gums had ''over-grown'' and was growing over his tooth - a common problem the vet says. A small (£££) operation removed it.

But he is still scratching his face. I am wondering about teeth, although his breath is good (unlike wind from elsewhere). His is due his annual MOT in a couple of weeks. Might just be his ultra sensitive skin (they do say English Setters are the most expensive when it comes to vet visits).

Usually the symptoms of doggy toothache are selective eating or chewing, ie avoiding hard foods or bones, occasionally you will see a swelling on the cheek below the eye from a tooth abscess, halitosis or bad breath does not always mean gum disease and subsequent dental disease. Dogs can be very stoic and so often the main sign is the difference in eating and well-being after having a "dental" at your vets. On the prevention side, my dogs are 12, 10, 10 and 2ish, all have been fed dry food all their days and their teeth are nearly indistinguishable, they do get occasional bones which gives a different problem scent.
