love personal plates, I know whats the point but hey bit of fun for sensible cost! Question is have seen some plates that just start with a single number or a double number, just wondered what the legalities are and if legal to use on a uk mainland reg car ?
couple of examples are 70 men ( 7 omen) 90 men (9 omen) did you get my drift any one know where these plates starting with these sort of numbers originate from, will ask dvla but like to hear what the forums recon. thanks guys

There are generic sites that will tell you EN was for a while Bolton. There is also a site that will tell you what car the plate is currently on. Somebody will be along in a bit to tell you. biggrin

This will probably answer your question:
http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/registrations/reg-l...

However, as already mentioned, DVLA do sell numbers, so may not necessarily have originated as per the link above.

Were you asking if single digit nos. etc. are legal, ie 1 A ? If so, yes. There are a few single digit/number around my area, originally issued in 1904.
You can buy plates 'on paper', called a retention certificate. Number can then be transferred onto a car, proving certain conditions are met, such as age of vehicle, and the 'nominee' on the certificate.

A distinctive registration, providing its completely legal adds a nice finishing touch to an older XJ

But get it even slightly wrong with even just a hint of illegality and it instantly becomes very

And will make you and anybody else in the car look like total and utter
