can be 3 or 5 dr - not bothered about mileage but would prefer some that isn't mind numingly dull or depreciates faster than I can get it home. She wants it to pop around town, shopping, kids drop off, easy parking, low maintenance, economic etc.... have the Disco for long family trips and wallet emptying upkeep....

currently looking at:

Audi A2 (timeless design, practical 5 door)
New Kia picanto (well priced lots of extras, new, funky)
New Chevvy Spark (same as Kia)
VW 1.9 Mk 5 Golf (all the usual VAG refinements, dull though?)
Fiat 500 (great looks and could be fun)

don't much like anything else (mini's,japanese, A class, beetle)

Don't understand why Korean is OK and Japanese not.

A Suzuki Swift is better than anything else on your list IMO.

Out of that list, the 500 would be the one to go for.

It'll be her choice though.

Alfa Mito 1.4 Lusso? Great performer with decent mpg, full leather and all the toys.

+1 on the Alfa. Definitely get her to try one. Best looking by far too.

500 is a cracking little car, my mum's on her second.

The twin air is a little belter but she's seeing similar fuel economy to her previous 1.2 despite Fiats ridiculous claims.

Goes and sounds a lot better though.

Hers is a Street model, black with red leather and black wheels. Looks like Darth Vaders roller skate smile

Possibly this but obviously don't pay anywhere near £8,000.

ok this ones a 2 door, but tbh probably as roomy and practical as a 500 is. Fantastic residuals, turbocharged, funky, cool and show me another car of this ilk with an interior like this has!

How big are the kids and how many are there?

It strikes me as odd that you list the a series of very compact cars like the 500 yet pick the Golf which is a whole class size bigger, why not a polo/fabia or Ibiza as these are the same class as the alternatives.

Another vote for the 500 here, my girlfirend has one and as small city cars go it isn't bad at all.

thanks all - seems 500 is getting lots of votes...will look at the Mito although i've never been too keen on alfa interiors....(her choice I know but I can influence things as I will drive it from time to time).

that Kia Picanto looks good too.

The A2 interests me as I might be able to get a FASH cracker with 40K on the clock for 4/5K. In my opinion Audi were well ahead of the times with this little belter.
