Having been a lifelong BMW convert (sorry!) I was persuaded by the 1-5k barge thread to purchase my 300 E. It's a lovely car, and i'm now commuting in a 1991 car (the oldest car I have ever driven).

As a new Mercedes owner, it would be great to get opinions on:

1) Where in Scotland or The Midlands should I use as a merc specialist?
2) My steering squeaks, and it's getting worse. Looking this up on Google it seems that this could be ball joints, but I want it fixed quickly - again a Merc specialist would be good - otherwise i'm off to the local main dealer just to ensure it's done frown

Should I get the Gearbox oil changed, and if so when, and who with?

I don't ask much!

I want to do the diff and transmission oil (and filter) on the 300e-24 i purchased a couple of months ago, just waiting to get the money for it.

Found some valvoline dexron IID that seems suitable, seems an easy enough job providing you can get under the car. So I'll probably pop down to a local garage to get it on their ramp, drop the sump and change the filter. Make sure the TC is drained as well.

If you do the diff, remember to get the fill plug undone first.

Sounds like a ball joint, the part itself is very cheap, the labour not so much... I think it was about £130 a side for my old E300D. Front ARB bushes can squeak on these too.

ATF & filter is worth doing if it's not in the history- the recommended interval is every 30k but if the gearbox is shifting fine and the fluid is a nice shade of clear-ish/red then it's not essential, but advised. I did around 70,000 miles on my old car with no change, the 'box shifted perfectly and fluid looked fine when I did change it.

Did you fix your jumping speedo btw? My new E300D did this, I took the cluster out and unscrewed the speedo cable connection- there was a lot of dried up grey lubricant in there which I cleaned out, and then a small spray of silicone lube and it's cured the jump.

I recommend replacing the front and rear anti-roll bar bushes and rear ARB links, they tighten up the car quite a bit for not much outlay.

There's loads of cheap improvements that can be done to these lovely old motors . Steering damper is another .20 quid and two bolts to sharpen up the tiller a bit .

Thankyou for the advice everyone. I think I will have the ATV done and someone look at the ball joints - away this weekend but will take a look underneath myself after that!
