Do any of you have any recommendations for a quality book about restoring the S3 V12 Jaguar E-Type. Its for a potential Christmas present for a friend starting work on one.

Thank you in advance.

Just restored a series 3 Roadster and these are the books I used :-

ORIGINAL JAGUAR E-TYPE The Restorers Guide by Philip Porter.

Factory Original JAGUAR E-TYPE by Anders Ditlev Clausager Photography by Simon Clay

JAGUAR E-TYPE 6&12 Cylinder Restoration Guide by Dr. Thomas F. Haddock.

Also recommend joining the E Type Forum http://etypeuk.com/forum

Good luck.

Thanks all, I will look into these. I saw some on Amazon and thought I would solicit your opinions. I am in the US, along with my mate with the E-Type. He got it cheap (uh oh), couldn't resist it. Its a '74 roadster, with a manual gearbox, white with a blue interior. It hasn't run for at least 10, maybe 15 years and was partially stripped at the front end. It came with a brand new leather interior, the body isn't too bad. The engine turns over by hand. He is trying to re-plumb everything under the bonnet, cooling, fuel, wiring etc from photos, and other ref stuff. So far so good, but a few details are eluding him, hence a good ref book may help.

If I think about it I will try and post a few photos as requested.

Unless the hype has died down the Haddock book will cost you rather a lot of money. I still have mine but they were selling for hundreds of dollars last time I looked. Porter's book is still available on Amazon though

I'll second that! Pat may be too modest to mention but he has to be one of the most experienced and enthusaistic restorers of cars (not just E-Types) I have come across. He has produced some wonderful cars including his impressive XKE-R. You can't go far wrong by referring to his website.

(I'll collect the £5 later Pat .... biggrin)

Another website well-worth looking at is the E-Type Forum on JagLovers - easily the biggest, friendliest and best-supported forum on the web - and its free to join!

Too kind, how is the '13 build going? Is it a runner yet, let me know when as I would love to see it in the flesh
Regards
Pat

Not a runner yet frown

Can't complete the body until its monocoque is complete - can't complete the monocoque until the rear suspension/engine/transaxle is in place - can't finally assemble the engine/transaxle/rear-suspension until the engine is rebuilt - can't complete the rebuild of the engine until the replacement dry sump is machined from billet (the original was butchered and converted into a wet sump) - can't begin machining the sump until the original in-sump scavenge/pressure pumps are rebuilt and returned from Jim Stokes - and so it goes ....

In the meantime, we have prepared everything else we can and all is lined up in readiness. As soon as Jim has worked his magic on the pumps (two scavenge and one pressure) I could be only two or three months from away firing it up.

Its been a long journey up to this point but I wanted to make sure it ends up as "right" as it can be.

Here's as far as we can go with the new monocoque for now. We did build a trial one in steel but have now been able to make the real one in original-spec ally. The fuel tanks etc are all in place but we can't finally insert the rear bulkhead panel or complete the rivetting until the engine/rear-suspension is in place.

Won't book my trip up North just yet then

It would seem so. There was a period a year or so back when they were selling for over £100 for some reason. Utterly incredible for a paperback which as far as I remember isn't that brilliant really. I haven't looked at my copy for probably over 10 years.

Can't believe that! The book is ok from originality point of view and seeing where all the changes and mods were made through the production, but it doesn't really give much information on restoration. Just helps you keep it to original spec, if that's what you want. £445.93, does anyone want a copy for half price £222.97 and I will chuck in free postage !! laugh
