2002 Toyota Avensis petrol leak

Morning everyone
Long story short, ran out of fuel earlier this week on the way home from work. Put a jerry can + £25 in on Tuesday night
Covered approximately 70 miles since then. Trip said 80 miles left but it ran out again last night, put in a jerry can and another £10 last night. Showed a quarter tank. Drove to girlfriends (10 miles) and then to work this morning (around 20 miles) and it is gone. Looked in work car park and there is a trail of petrol drops from entrance to where I have parked and a smell of fuel
Spoken to a mechanic who says they use metal pipes so may have rusted through. Has anybody come across any other issues that it could be?
