I guess the OP means glancing at the tax disc to establish "on the spot" what the car is registered as with DVLA, as opposed to going on the internet etc (and some of us don't have mobiles with internet, I'm proud to be in this group
) or having sight of the vehicle's documents? He arguably has a point...

The tax disc is a pointless piece of paper (unless you have some originals to go with your classic)that costs a huge sum to produce.If you think about it what also is the point of insurance and MOT certificates?? who looks at them? mine just spend every year in a draw.The police,parking wardens etc etc can tell immediately if a car is taxed,MOT`d and insured so never ask for them.I`m sure a simple system can be arranged when cars change hands.

Seems pretty logical. Although many of us might tax our cars online, my Dad still goes to the Post office to do his cos he's a technophobe. I'm not sure if doing away with the disc this will hit our already struggling and hard done by PO's though.
A few years back someone broke into my car and nicked everything they could, including the Tax disc, the plod said it was a common thing, although I can't see any point, after all, if you get caught with someone elses disc that was stolen in your car, it's kind of incriminating isn't it?.

In the days before things all became instantly checkable by plod electronically, people used to nick discs just so the date was right, you have to get quite close to read the vehicle details, these days they barely take any notice of the disc.
On the subject of doing away with discs, I've always said they should charge road fund through fuel duty, no one would be able tonot pay that way, and the more you use your car, the more you pay, seems much simpler to me, especially as mot and insurance can be checked easily!

Sometime in the future the only thing vehicles will have is a DVLA chip.It will tell the authorities if everything is legal and up to date with the car and owner,automatically charge your bank account for all fees,taxes, congestion,parking,toll`s,etc etc.It may even be monitored by Big Brother so you will be tracked all over the UK,they will know where the car was at 4.30 last Monday.
