Seeing as we are partly to blame for Subarus demise... I wondered if we cold nail the reasons for them pulling out once and for all

Preferably the badge snobs and loons stay away, would be cool to get it from the horses mouth.... ( we all know that some people didn't 'get' the car )

My reasons for me not buying lately
-Subaru UKs decision to try and distance themselves from the rally rep ( spoiler deletion) peed me off..
-numb looking design
-company car tax

( I bought new in 2002, a 2005 in 2006, and an 02 'toy' in 2010 )

The owner of the garage I use has the new impreza in saloon form with four exhaust pipes. I think it's the best looking, sorry, only good looking impreza. My ex wife had the five door variant which was a minger, but it suited her.
I really like the new four doors, really like them. I don't like the road tax price.

Looked into getting one instead of my new car a couple of weeks back after going out in an original STi. It just didn't feel as special to drive, was quick but didn't give as good sensation of it as the original.

Still want an STi PPP though...

i had a jap import STi

subaru UK were a bunch a swear words when I had the car, even something simple like locking wheel nuts and a top rad hose

apparently were special order from Japan and would take 6 weeks and may not fit

funny cos a mate with a UK car got the bits for me over the counter and shockingly they fitted perfectly

To be fair though, that's the stance of most dealers if you have an unofficially imported car.

What's fair about it? It's just dealers being pissy because you didnt buy a UK car.

Best thing to do if you own an import is find the part number of the item you want and just quote that rather than the specific model. If the dealer gets pissy try another, shortsighted in the extreme on the part of the dealer to get arsey about ordering parts because your car's an import.

By fair, I meant across dealers, and that Subaru weren't treating you unfairly compared to other dealers. I never said in the grand scheme of things it was fair on the consumer. I agree, they act almost like a spoilt child when you mention it's an import.

I had a 2001 wrx for about 6 years, and then moved on to a BMW. A replacement scooby was never on the cards due to cost and concerns at the time over the chocolate 2.5 block which IM didn't seem interested in sorting.

It was a good call, the BMW is a far better car, I only miss the burble and the boot.

Biggest issue with the dealers recently was that the last 3 I've been to have been dual franchise and so have had no Subarus available to look at, let alone test drive! How were people supposed to buy a Subaru if you can't see one before you buy?

Other than that, still love my 03 wagon WRX and can't see me changing it for a long time as there is nothing comparable on the market.

I think a lot of it is down to price, and road tax. Its really a big thing these days, its that Road Tax price. Youll see customers changing cars to save £70 a year, when its cost £2000 to change etc. Its madness. My thoughts;

High Road Tax
High Fuel Costs
High Service Costs
Not popular as a company car because of all above, and comp car tax!

Have to agree. People might buy a scoob for a toy or short distance commute but not for any serious mileage as they're just too expensive to run. If I had to do more than 10,000 miles a year in mine I'd have to really sit and think if I'd want to blow all that dosh on running it when I could easily halve my costs by changing to a BMW diesel.

Question is, would a diesel engined impreza have saved them? Subaru brought out their diesel engine a bit too late imo and in too few a numbers in order to get any kind of grip on the used market, where they'd have been held in high regard I'd have thought. As it is the diesel 4x4's they've got out currently aren't exactly head turners for the right reason.

The problem Subaru had was that the Impreza had sold because it was an awesome performance vehicle for the money, and people were happy to overlook things like a not especially good quality interior and slightly iffy styling because they went so well and made a good noise.

If you are going to sell to a crowd that doesn't want a rally rep, you have to make sure you are giving them what they want. Generally things like a boxer engine and vectored torque control are a long way down the list behind soft touch plastics, a good stereo, and fuel economy.

I leased a 52 reg wrx for a couple of years. Poor build quality, weak clutch, thirsty and hammered tyres. It was quick, handled well and good to drive. Replaced it with a clio 182 which was almost as quick, better built(!), cheaper to run, and as good a drive.

Renault better than Subaru build quality shocker!

There was rumour of an STi diesel... Could have saved them in uk if done correctly..

I had a WRX PPP SL. Went to replace it with the new shape WRX STI, but it just wasn't as good, especially for 20 odd grand. Plus the dash was actually worse than my one, which was amazing. Ended up spending about half as much on an Alfa 159 Q4 of all things.

I don't know which Subaru owners you know, but the ones I know would not want to drive a flattery smoke box, especially one with an STi badge on it.

We have the other side of the Subaru coin.

While most focus on the chav wagons don't forget for many years subaru sold stuff like the forester which was a no nonsense 4wd estate car which can take huge amounts of abuse.

The current forester looks delicate and it is a SUV that has been rolled in glitter which is sad.

I'm wading in way out of my depth here, but I've long wanted a first or second facelift of the 2nd gen (WRX or WRX STI).

If it wasn't for the ruinous servicing and fuel costs, I'd still have one in a heartbeat.

I've owned 3 Impreza's over the years, the hatch put me right off plain and simple + 300hp doesn't really cut it any more seeing as cars keep getting heavier and heavier.
