expected depreciation on these cars?
Discussion
I am looking at getting a more comfortable car to compliment (or if it is really good replace) my Lotus Europa S. I tend to buy cars that don't depreciate a lot, which is great because you just roll your money into the next one, so depreciation is a big consideration. I am very interested in peoples views on what these cars will be worth in 3 years:
Lotus Evora S: 2011 model can be had for ~40-45K now
Jag XKR 5ltr: 2010 model can be had for 35-40K now
996 Turbo: A very good one is around 32-35K now
997 Gen 2 "S": An OK one is ~45K now
I don't like the DB9 or the Mazzer, not sure if there are any other 2+2 sports coupes that I should be thinking about (that can take a child seat in the back - Evora is a push I know)

Evora hasnt really 'taken off' in the market. You would be exposed to the risk that Lotus could cease to exist in its present form in three years time, potentially denting values.
Xkr is surely near end of life so would anticipate high depreciation.
997 should be fairly predictable, will continue to depreciate at a moderate rate. Early cars are 20-25k now i think, so a gen2 should probably end up in that range three years hence.
I agree 996 may be the best bet to avoid losing lots of money, esp as it is cheaper to begin with.
Consider looking for something less mainstream, tho.

Just a thought, I think the early R35 GTRs are around that price range, and seem to be holding value reasonably well to date.
Its a bit older, but if you want a 911 that will hold value, Id suggest looking for the best 993 you can find.
Bentley Continental is in that price range and comfortable, but I guess depreciation still has a way to go on those, so hard to recommend.

thanks for the advice - really not sure what else is out there, my criteria are:
1) Looks exotic
2) sounds awesome (6 or 8 cylinders)
3) Is a 2+2
4) Is fun to drive and can keep pace with "fast" cars
The Europa vs the Evora, I expect the Evora is just enough easier to get into, just enough more modern and has 2 small back seats for a legless 7 year old that it may be worth considering (maybe). I think the Europa S is probably faster, but the Evora S will sound much better

I'd expect any Evora would blow a Europa into the weeds.at the end of the day the only way to minimise depreciation is to buy an old/cheap car. So what you really need to be looking for is something with low running costs. There's not many exotics in that category but you ought to take a look at the Americans.
If you are keeping the Europa S then the XKR will give you unrivalled power and equipment for your budget. No other car on your list gets near it.
It will however depreciate more than the others on your list albeit not that much in my view because there are still 2/3 years left to run for the XKR and its still so much better than its rivals.

The Jag still has a long way to fall.
996tt seems to have found a level - just beware that the more desirable 997tt is not that far away...
997.2 S will keep falling, but more gently than the Evora or Jag. Possibly the mose reasonably running costs as well.

The problem is if everyone takes that attitude Lotus will go under and who the hell wants to see that? Do values of minor league exotics really tumble if the manufacturer goes under anyway? If anything it would make the car more rare and desirable, possibly? Lets face it Aston did well with its junior car the Vantage but because there are so many its second hand values have taken a pasting. Having the company stay solvent doesn't necessarily help 2nd hand values.
To the original poster, look into my eyes, not around the eyes and (clicks fingers) your under! Now go buy an Evora!
I think a 'very good' 996 turbo in the right colour and kept very very good would be a sensible buy.
The 997 will continue to drop especially when the 991's start becoming more common used.
The Jag as great a car as it is will unfortunately half in value over the coming 3-5years. The Evora is a bit of an unknown, supply isnt exactly flying out of the factory at the moment but lots of uncertainties with Lotus, its probably the least practical but potentially the best to drive, heart over head job that one!
