After being reduced to a 1k shed after a marriage screw up I am getting pissed at not having a decent car, fun rides out in a Volvo V40 estate aren't that erm.... fun.

I really miss my 964 C2 and ache to get back into a Porsche albeit a more modern one with a budget of 20k I am thinking a Cayman S, however at this price (I imagine) it would not be an official approved Porsche and would be highly unlikely to be warrantied. Yes the 'Porsche engine failure' posts are a bit worrying.

The only alternative as far as I can see is the Z4M Coupe or an MX5

Cayman S

Things better than the Z4M

Handling
Looks
Its a Porsche

Worse

Common
Less power
Engine more likely to go tits up
No specialists in my area

Is having no warranty going to be lethal? Who is the best provider of a warranty if its not Porsche? I'd be gutted if I got one and the engine let go, I've had a look at the 2.9 which is supposed to be better but does not really give the power for the money i.e Z4M 338bhp Cayman 2.9 261bhp

Heart saying fck it get the Porsche but head says Z4M will be faster and more reliable.......

Sounds to me like you have made your mind up you want the Porsche! Buy it, you hear a lot about engine problems on the forums but the actual failure rate is something like 2% - not worth worrying about.

The Cayman is probably the better car on the whole, but better looking than a Z4M coupe? I dont think so!

Indeed, especially with some nice wheels. Ok, this is a bit "American" in it's style, but I think it looks stunning

vs

Granted the Cayman looks great, but I prefer the Z4MC

The Z4M is a bit of an animal to drive, I wouldnt use one every day but for a blast out they are excellent, and much quicker than the cayman S in a straight line, the porker would be quicker through the bends as its a better car to drive quickly around corners.

Both are very good at what they do.

If you could live with an auto then the SLK55 is the only other alternative I can think of really.

Used my Z4M every day, did ring trips, spa oulton park etc.

It's better than a cayman in every measurable way IMHO.

Apart from the chassis.

It pretty much is that simple, the cayman will always be the sweeter drive but the Z is everything else.

(worked well on track too btw)
