Had to change the rear wheel bearing on the beater Ka today. Not done one before, but not a job Id worry about doing.

Anyway, the hub is nut is one of these :



Why is it made like this ? Price ? Torque distribution ? Bored designer?

Its like a lot of washers held in a cage kind of thing. Odd.

At a guess, anti-seize properties?

Self locking although not the best type as they have been known to come loose. To be sure I'd put a bit of blue locktite on it too.

how do you get the correct socket onto the nut then?

It's only a nut with a captive washer....

Noble used these on their m12s, bit crap but the porsche Boxster ones fit n are about the same price
as the Ford ones

errr

well say it's a 32mm nut. It's then got a half-arsed cage about it?

Its made up of 3 thin nuts (usually 3) inside the cage, it's a very effective locking nut.

It works in a similar way to locking two nuts together on a bolt.
