Well the micra is coming to the end of its days well in its current form but thats another thread

I'm bored of roger the rep trying to kill himself just so he can get infront of me despite me doing the speed limit so i think it is time for something a bit bigger

In an ideal world i'd buy a nissian leaf so i can completely ignore petrol stations but i can't justify the expense

So do i go for a modernish diesel which i will hate and will be a 4 wheeled time bomb or do i go for a pious which appear to be bonkers reliable and get similarish MPG to a wiesel.

LPG is a no go as no LPG stations near me.

I am not looking for anything exciting or even vaguely fun just something to get me to work and back before being dumped in a corner of the drive and ignored until the next monday morning

It looks like the wiesel is taking a lead

Any reasons why?

How long is your commute, and on what kind of roads? If I was in your shoes I'd be looking at the bangernomics route I think.
Ie lowest possible overall ownership costs over the vehicles lifetime. Don't know if a modern diesel or prius could match that.

Cos Jeremy Clarkson said so.

General consensus will be to bag a 10 year petrol Avensis for a few k and run it into the ground. Hard to justify not doing so unless its mega miles.

Why is a diesel a time bomb? Buy something decent and spend a few quid on a cambelt service and there is no reason for it to cost you money. If anything the battery in that Prius us a time bomb. Have a look at the replacement costs, and compare that to an awful lot of servicing for the diesel...

About four years ago I bought my good lady a 1.7CDTI Astra, an ex MOD fleet car at 5 years old for around£1800 at a car auction.

It was by far and away the most tedious thing I have ever, ever driven. It did 50mpg, never broke and cost buttons to run. Something like that would still be my go to car for super cheap transport that I didn't need to care about

And how many Prius have had to have their battery packs replaced (as far as I know the answer is zero); compared to how many turbo/DPF/whatever failures on modern diesels.

I'd bet on the Prius for reliability and maintenance costs.

You probably get a nicer diesel for your money, though.

True the battery is a major major worry as it is 100% certain it will die and it is hugely difficult to find any companies that will replace the battery for you. maybe you could be so kind as to find me a company that does this as i can't find one

Where as with a diesel there is a tiny chance of it going wrong but thankfully there are thousands of companies that offer refurbished turbos or DWF replacements.

God knows why as everyone knows the real money is in fixing dead prius batteries

At 40 miles a day there is no point in a diesel in my opinion as they command higher purchase prices that you just won't offset. Plus you have to put up with a stty diesel. Of the two options I would therefore say a Prius.

40 miles a day?

I'd be looking at something with a long warranty, petrol, possibly Korean and pre-owned.

However, out of the two I'd take the diesel.

What's your budget?

Chose the diesel because it gives you a lot of options that, if nothing else, simply look better than a prius. I'm sure a prius would do the job just fine though.

I voted Prius - I choose to run one after all, but it's a genuinely nice place to spend (a lot of in my case) time, and has averaged a real 55mpg across 84K miles.

It has been faultless, and I'm replacing it with the Plug-In version next month. I even quite like the fact it's not just another anonobox in terms of looks.

Fair enough, then of your choices I'd have the diesel, but only really out of fear of the potential unknown issues with ageing hybrid technology.

FWIW when I found myself in a similar situation to you and needed a reliable car, I bought a 98 Corolla, 75,000 miles later (147,000 in total) its still going strong and has needed nothing but consumables and I service it myself every 10,000 miles. Very cost effective motoring.

I do 40 mile a day and bought an E46 M3, far more fun, a nicer place to be than anything mentioned already. I only swapped it for a 335d touring due to family commitments. Still cheaper than a Prius.

Buy a Toyota Avensis or Corolla instead, they are cheaper than the Pious and do about the same MPG (40 ish) outside of cities.

You want a car that you can drive to work every day then park at home without any hassle. Petrol Corolla or Avensis as above. You'll never love it, but you'll respect it because the things just don't break down and everything works, day in, day out for years.

I voted Pious as it's an interesting car with new technology. Would be the least boring choice for a boring daily driver imo.
