Okay, it's not a shed - it's an £11k nearly new car with 17k miles.

But I'm looking to buy something that is better on the motorway than my current car due to an upcoming change in job role. Dull is, unfortunately, not a problem and I don't have the inclination to live with 25 mpg and a Christmas card from my mechanic just to get a V8 sound.

Ideally I'd like a Mercedes, BMW or Jag but they're just not in budget this time round unless I go for a three-year-old with 80k+, and I can't lease because both my mileage and the length of time I'm able to keep the car are too unpredictable. A true shed isn't an option, either, unfortunately.

I've had 406s in the past, but never a 407 ... and they were generally great, although Peugeot has got worse since then generally.

So given that I want a cheap, comfy place with moderate depreciation and good fuel economy, does this seem like my best bet? Will I save money with this over say 3 years, 60k than compared to a £17k C200 or a £19k 316d if I could find one (all the cheap C-Classes seem to be C180 petrol autos), even if it meant financing over a longer period?

I can't offer any advice with regard to the cost to run via the German options you list but I drove a 508 diesel last week and was very impressed. The ride quality was truly excellent considering our roads are potholed and in a general state of disrepair. The diesel engine was torquey and refined. I imagine it would make a great cruiser.

I like them but for that sort of caper I'd be looking at the more obvious choice of a Mondeo. Whenever I've driven previous generations I'm always stunned at how amazingly good they are.

CatJ on here runs one as a company car, speak to her

I think they offer a lot for the money but I'd be tempted by something like a Skoda Octavia for similar cash

I think they're supposed to be pretty good all round. Would at least stand out from the 3xxd crowd!

id be going for the peugeot or similar citroen (new shape looks nice and with the right suspension rides brilliantly). For your task I'd want super comfy seats and a refined ride above all else.

Left field but if I were looking for something French only a Citroen C6 would cut it

508 is a great car to drive and sit in. Don't expect the interior to stand up as well as as something German though. Also I've seen a couple of 508's with sub 10k with things like failed bonnet struts. Little I know but perhaps indicative of less than stellar build. Definitely a nice proposition though assuming it's reliable.

They are nice but a bit old now and most will be out of warranty, and fuel economy isn't the best. Shame they didn't bring out a replacement, I guess the DS5 would be the closest equivalent.
