... disconnect the internal fan?

We don't have a sky subscription - the box is used just for basic tv and radio. As the sky+ features don't work without one, I've removed the hd and cabling to try and shut the machine up. It makes an intermittent whirring noise that is quite annoying.

Now I've removed the main source of heat (the hd), I'm wondering if I can now disconnect the cooling fan, being the only remaining source of noise. I've had a non-hd box before and that didn't have a fan so perhaps the same applies here.

What do you all think? Replies gratefully received!

Go and buy an HD freesat box

eg http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MANHATTAN-PLAZA-HD-S-FRE...

also means you wont have to scroll through loads of channels you cant get.

If you cut off the fan the box MAY in time start to die, Capacitors overheating are the main reason for sky boxes to die.

Thanks for the reply and it is definitely a future plan to get a Freesat HD recorder, but this one does a job for the time being. If turning off the fan just results in shortening the life of the box (rather than burning the house down) then I'll do it.

Suggest you maybe unplug the fan from the board rather than cut any cables as im not sure if the box has diagnostics built in. Just keep an eye on the heat it generates when disconnected, if the fan also cools the chip sets then be aware chip sets generate a lot of heat!
