hi guys,

ive now started stripping the wishbones off the chim so i can clean them up, paint them and re-bush etc.

This is the 1st time ive done this job, and have noticed that the front uppers are 2 separate pieces. Now all the others I see advertised for sale are a single piece unit, with a small connecting bar bteween both side.

something odd here! lol

iirc early Chimaeras had the same set up as early Griffiths - two piece front upper wishbones. My pre-cat has these and they seem to work fine. The big disadvantage is that setting the camber angle is an absolute pain. The one piece wishbones allow easier setting as a wedge can be put between the top balljoint and the bar which connects the two halves of the wishbone. This allows fairly quick and precise adjustments to be made.

Hope this helps!

This is correct. The newer single piece ones are a straight swap if you so wish. You will just have to get some spacers for either side of the ball joint, as iirc the two piece ones have vey thin shims. Got my spacers from Clever Trevor.

these ones had a spacer at each side - not measure them yet to find out what size they are.

Does anyone know what the stock thickness is?

According to p.201/202 of the 'bible', two piece wishbones had one spacer each side of the balljoint and the one piece had one spacer in front of the balljoint. The spacer(s) control the castor angle of the suspension. I believe the single spacer is 8mm., not sure what the two spacer adds up to, but would guess the same. Below is a link which may help.
