Merc W124 coupe
Discussion
Is it me or do these seem slightly undervalued, the cabrio is expensive but a fairly decent looking coupe can be had for a grand upwards, seems cheap for what is a very handsome, properly built Mercedes that makes it's successors look a bit lame.
I think they look best as standard, the kiss of death for any Merc of that era is chrome arches and aftermarket wheels bigger than standard, the owners usually finish ruining it with a 99 quid bargain private plate with at least four z's in.
What do they drive like, is the 320 the only real engine choice.

They drive like they look, really. Steady and well planted. M-ways are fantastic. If it's been rebushed and looked after it rides very well, if it's been neglected it rides the same but there migght be the odd clonk on bumps. They hide abuse and mileage like no other car I've driven, so buying cheap can be risky, if you like your cars to be 'right'. There are bargains out there but Merc specialists do seem to have the pick of the bunch... at a price.
You're right on all counts - the newer W210 wasn't built as well, and the 124 now has an air of real substance, esp. when not messed up with Rude Merc style add ons. Class.
320 is surprisingly spritely, with a nice growl higher up the rev range. Not tried a 300, but the 300 24V was BMW-like, very revvy and a nicer noise imho. 220 is a plodder, not so much power but really, in a car like this do you need loads of bhp? 220 is supposed to be a crisper handler too due to less nose weight.
Nick Froome/bolide, r129 and others know more than me - they'll be along in a bit
I have a 320 estate, which is unwell, and needs work, or selling. I'd love a 320 or 300-24v coupe, dark hue, black leather, heated seats, aircon and cruise. The cabrio, even though there's some around for 4-5k, worry me too much with the power hood and the extra costs that come with it.
