A mate is looking for suggestions for his next car.

He has run a modified VX220 Turbo with circa 260bhp for 2 yrs and wants something nicer with a working heater and carpets etc.

He drives a van all day so its for weekend use only and whilst he could afford £30k he'd rather spend closer to £15k and doesn't want to lose lots of money.

He's thinking Cayman S but he'd like a convertible really but doesn't like the look of Boxsters.

Best I could think of was an S2000 or 350Z conv. any better suggestions ?

I think most things will feel pretty pedestrian for that budget after a VX220T. What about an M3 convertible? E46 is well below his budget, a few tweaks they can be made pretty savage.

My standard answer, but my brother has a stage 3 VXT which I've driven. I've also owned the non turbo jobby.

I had a BMW Z4M, I'd say that gives the same sort of thrills, (340hp or so), but with much more luxury!

How about a Europa SE?

Carpets, working heater (in the one I drove) but otherwise not that different to a VX220T (I prefer the looks of the Europa too).

Shouldn't lose much money on one as I've been waiting for them to depreciate to my level for years and I'm not any closer.

Or: is £30k enough for a F360?

I went from a 220 to a caterham. The heater is brilliant and it's a good step up. I looked a boxters, s2000's etc but they felt a bit to restrained compared so I just went more hardcore and got the 7. It's also the car I have also wanted.

That comes under the "losing lots of money" category - not on it's price but buying / selling and servicing.

Z4M is a good idea - shame the pre 09 models are so damn ugly.

He doesn't want an M3 etc as he only needs 2 seats and would like to keep the weight down which goes against my 350z suggestion.
