Buying a car in an hour and the guy says its on a private plate. He's wondering if when he sends away the v5 he can put 'my' name on the v5 then just send it to dvla?Or does he have to send it to DVLA in his name, then when the plates changed over send it away again when he gets it backin my name?Need an answer sort of quick, cheers!

If you're buying the car your name goes on the V5 and you get the green slip.
It's up to him to sort out the plate transfer.

Remember your insurance companies may charge an admin fee to change the plate number on your documents so make sure you tell him he has to cover your costs if he wants his crappy plate back!

This never ceases to amaze me - you want to sell a car on a private plate, take it off first, be ready to sell!

FFS why don't people sort this before they put a car up for sale!

The reg doesn't belong to anyone it belongs to the car. You either have to trust him that he will let you have the car, send the forms off to get the reg taken off then sent the v5 back to get it changed over go you. Or he has to trust you that when the v5 comes back to you you will send the forms off to get the reg taken off.

Option 2 is better for you but will still involve you filling in forms.

If you go for option 1 will your insurance be ok with you having a car that is t registered in your name.

Remember the insurance co will probably charge for an amendment when you change the plates over.

There is always the option to go to a dvla office and get the reg transferred there and then but there isn't many of them so you may not have a local one.

It is no problem, on the new V317 you can do a registered keeper change, and retain the reg in a different name.

You fill in your details as the new keeper on the logbook, and you go down on the V317 as the registered keeper. The grantee of the retention is put down as the seller (second page of the V317) and you send the docs (V317, cheque for £105 and MOT) off to your local DVLA office.

DVLA gets the paperwork, transfers the car into your name as R/K, retains the reg in the sellers name, then sends you the replacement tax disk and MOT to you the buyer.

I do several of these a week, no problems.
