Still doesn't explain why there are so many cross-over models?

If you want a large 4/5 door car, which do you choose?

Depends on how large and whether you want four or five doors, I guess.

You visit the dealer and they sell you the most expensive one you can afford.

It's called "marketing".

It's just a shame that they all look exactly the same. It's like they designed many schemes of the same car in different sizes and just went to market with all of them.
I reckon a time will come when ordering an Audi will be like ordering an Americano from Starbucks, tall grande or venti- and like Starbucks it'll be overpriced and anything extra with it will multiply the price

When was there a car company that did a range of cars that all looked totally different?
Not in a long while, and probably not since continuous automated production. Indeed I never said that the entire range should look totally different. However, until recently, a 'family' of cars would be designed around a 'theme' of manufacturer trademarks but would all look largely different and would all occupy a different market sector. BMW is not a great example as they have gone in the same direction as Audi, but even they were making some different designs when my car was made;

Z3
3-Series: E36 Saloon, Compact, touring, M3
5-Series: E34 Touring
E39 Saloon
7-Series: E38 Saloon, LWB
8-Series: E31 Coupe

...and in the same year, Ford released the groundbreaking ka, Audi was designing the original TT (also groundbreaking) etc etc.

I'm very lucky as neither Audi nor BMW make a car I have ever wanted. Indeed, I slipped into a coma just reading the list of banality and had to be revived by an American V8 being revved at full chat.

Would a skip not serve as a suitable alternative? wink

Based on my experience with the standard A5 convertible its probably not a good base on which to develop a performance version.

I like my 1996 BMW as you may have guessed from my previous post, but generally speaking Audis and BMWs from the current millennium leave me completely cold, with the exception of BMW M3, Z4MC and maybe certain Audi Quattro models.
Judging my my Dad's A5, Audis are now just fashionably designed skips for carrying yout 10-speaker stereo around in. No driver enjoyment whatsoever.
