Here is my Mk1 Golf GTI. It's a Series 2, 1600 GTI with a 5 speed gearbox.

My main reason for posting here is that I've reached one of those ownership crossroads. I have ideas of putting a 2.0 16v engine in and maintaining as standard a look as possible. Or alternatively, selling her with the prospect of buying RWD or keeping and maintaining full originality.

Any thoughts/opinions/input welcome.

It would be a shame to spoil ut with engine swaps and what not, if you are bored with it then sell it and buy something else.

Another vote for keeping it standard. In the long run they'll be the most desireable and that one looks lovely.

my mate has one, he stuck a 2.0 audi bottom end with a golf ported 16v head to his, its a very fast little car, they dont weigh much, id go for it, makes it such a fun car that can outperform most stuff.

Air ride.

No please don't! It looks lovely and original, I'd be wanting to keep it that way.

Thanks for your input folks. The general consensus from people I've spoke to is to keep it original, seems to be the recurring theme here too.

These are pictures from when I bought it. The front number plate has been put back to it's proper place since.

With regard to the registration mark, the vehicle was built in 1982 but registered in 1983, hence the Y plate.

I don't know what it is with cars, there's always something else you want. The RX8 looks great value for money now but I'm sure there would be an enormous amount of seller remorse if I was to let my Golf go.

Why not go towards the cool black and gold Bentley look? Similat to another OP in the area. Gold wheels, etc.

No, just joking! Love the current look!

You could drop a 16v in and if in the future you can put back to original spec if you want. I am in the process of building a 2.0 Coraddo 9a block with a kr 16v cylinder head to fit into my mk1 campaign.Just trying to find Scirocco 16v inlet manifold and pipework so I can keep injection metering head in the original mk1 position.
