Same in Morayshire !!!
When it is +5C seems to be gritters everywhere ?
When the snow & ice actually settles on the road my daily 44 mile return commute along the A96 to Keith , not a gritter to be seen anywhere on the A & B routes
They still have not got it right after all these years... !!
Regards
B

Preventative measure? It doesn't have to be bang on 0c on our (supposedly accurate) in-car temp gauges for the road surface to be just off, or about to, freeze..

They have to do it then.

It's against Health & Safety for the gritter operators to be outside working if the temperature drops below 3deg C.

They do do it before hand from what i remember. The more that's out there without being washed away, the better it works when the ice and snow arrives.

If they're gritting pavements, it prevents pedestrians from having to walk in the road to avoid the icy pavements so they don't slip. My view anyway

Guess the councils are damned if they do and damned if they don't. It's the winter shout, so use a snotter if your PnJ is too precious for the odd bit of council sponsored pebble dashing.

I'd rather too much grit, than too little, especially as the weather can be changeable, for instance the Met Office had an ice warning from 5pm Mon until 11am yesterday (for the NE of Scotland).

Or if everyone used winter tyres they wouldn't need to use as much grit and salt.

Was frosty with ice lying in Lochgilphead yesterday morning.

They were doing the M8/ M77 at 0330hrs at +6 degrees a short while before the torrential rain came down to last the next two days! Total waste of money!
