Cat's from vans and mega bucks and there has been a nationwide increase in thefts... sounds plausible to me

Yeah, I'd guess it's the cat rather than the exhaust system as a whole. Sounds plausible.

We got hit at work (Motorhome dealer) numerous times a few years back, they ignored the Merc/Ford stuff but robbed the cats from the Fiat/Pug clones as two bolts and they come off, they cost us pushing £800 to replace but weigh in for £80 for the platinum in them.
A Better alarm system and fitting security bolts as soon as the van arrives has now stopped the problem.

Yes, vans and 4x4s - high enough to crawl underneath.

Find a local scrap dealer and take it down (normally with some ID).

Or go to your local scrappy with it.

On a lot of delivery vans, I've seen notices stating that the CATs have been protected with a form of locking mechanism.

It's a sad old world when you have to revert to those sorts of deterrents.

My neighbour has a Merc Sprinter type thing. His Cat got nicked about a fortnight ago, while parked outside my house. Charming.

As I recall places like legoland and the like with huge car parks filled with lots of cars suffered a while back with cat theft, owners all inside having fun and scrotes in the car park crawling under anything high enough to get at the cat.

A couple of years ago where I was working, Range Rovers and Land Rovers were being targeted by criminals, who were going underneath the car and cutting out the cats. Similarly, some things like VW Transporters were having their spare wheels nicked too, from underneath the vehicle.

yeah, the sprinter cat's get pinched as they are £730+vat! When the vans are out of warranty and some don't self re-generate (after certain amounts of stop and starts the ecu pumps more fuel in to clear cat from crap), they are mega to buy so people just pinch them.

I work in a Merc commercial garage and we sell catloc kits that shield the cat, therefore reducing theft. The thieves were smashing the side window, opening the bonnet and taking off the exhaust from the turbo (4 bolts) and then removing the exhaust from underneath. One customer alone had 7 vans done in one night! Bonus for us that day!

Cheers

Rear lights used to get nicked from MkIII Cortinas in the 70's - the lenses faded so they needed to be replaced and they could be removed from outside the car by undoing a few screws.

Doesn't the re-generation thingy refer to the DPF, and not the cat, or are they one and the same on Merc commercials?

I had a diesel Cit C5 and it had a seperate cat and DPF - just nosy really...
