All these latest Canon camera bodies......

I'm a bit out of the loop, so wondered if someone could summarise and highlight what they're all about?! Firstly I'm a Canon user and want to stay that way...

Currently got a 40D, with a variety of EF and EFS lenses but all sort of 'mid' level - Canon 15-85mm, Canon 70-300IS, Nifty 50, and Sigma 10-20mm.

I've shot a variety of things with it - motorsport, watersport, landscapes and even done a couple of weddings and functions, although to be honest the weddings were challenging without fixed aperture zooms and its not something i'd recommend.

My favourites still have to be landscapes as before anything else, i'll grab the camera and just take scene after scene, and it keeps me busy when out walking.

Having not looked at any review (for fear of wanting to buy something else), what are all the new camera's for? Are some better at landscapes than others or is it just down to video capability?

I'm currently looking to save for a monitor calibration tool for the Mac as I think I need one!

As Crmcatee said, unless you feel that your 40D is letting you down in some way, why do you feel the need for another camera?

FWIW I upgraded from a 40D to a 7D and it was a worthwhile upgrade being better in almost every respect.

However, it does depend on what you want from a camera. If you want more frames per second, Auto ISO or video capability then only a new body will do.

But, if you want better picture quality then you really should have a look at getting some better lenses first as the ones you have won't be getting the best out of any body. I'd recommend a 24-105L as a good walkabout lens.

Any EF-S lenses you have won't work on a FF body.

The only lens you have that will work on ff is the 50mm (not sure if the 70-300mm is EF or not?) so unless you want a total change I'd look at the 7D, I moved from the 50D to the 7D and it was a big improvement. Another option would be something like a 650D, I know it's the range below the 40D but the spec is excellent.

It just so happens I'll be selling my 7D in the new year as Im moving to a 5D mk3 but that isnt my motivation for recommending the 7D, it is an excellent all round camera

If you are just wondering if it is the way to go, it probably isn't. When you start hitting the limitations of your camera, be it AF/low light ability/resolution etc, that is when you know it is time to upgrade (unless you just want a shiny new gadget of course).

The 50 and 70-300 would work on FF. But they would both be 'shorter'
You would need to swap the 10-20 for something like a 17-40L and the 15-85 for the 24-105f4L

IMO for what you shoot a 7d would be a huge improvement. Better af, better viewfinder, better IQ and noise.
