Got a budget of around 8k for a new car and I'm leaning towards this

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...

Decent looks (apart from the front), nice place to sit with the leather seats and nice dash, mildly warm performance, good mpg, low tax, cheap insurance

Am I mad to spunk 8k on a used fiat?

Initial thought when I saw it was "Yuk".

Probably not a bad choice though.

Such as?

Anything with more performance will cripple me on insurance and mpg will no doubt be crap. I could go for something around 5-6k to offset these costs but I'm struggling to come up with a solution

Is there a reason you would go for that over says. 350z, or something a bit fruitier than the fiat? Insurance or something like that?

Nicer place to sit, MPG may be worse however.

if insurance is an issue the best advice i can give you is
drive something cheap enough so you dont need fully comp
and wouldn't bother claiming if it was stolen

Yeah insurance. I'm 25 yet they want well over a grand on anything you would call remotely close to hot hatch

Why not spend 7k on something interesting, and pay the insurance!

It's not where my £8k would go, but it does look pretty nice, and probably be pretty nippy. I say if you like it and the numbers stack up for you, go for it.

For one thing insurance will come round again and bit him in the bum year 2.

I'd go polo.

Given the utterly vertiginious depreciation, yes.

If you want an old Fiat, get one for £500 and spend the rest on coke and hookers. Your cash will disappear at a similar rate, but it will be far more fun.

I had a Jag 3.2 at 20, living in Merseyside. Now, I accept that that was 7 1/2 years ago, but the insurance, with no NCB, was £1,700 for the first year. Surely you can find something more interesting than this to drive which won't be too rapey on insurance, and won't suffer such massive depreciation?

Yes, you'd be insane.

How about a Swift Sport for something warm? Maybe a Polo GTi? Or Panda 100HP if you want a Fiat?

We took a Punto Evo in px against an Alfa Mito last week. The Punto was the most disappointing newish car I've had the unfortunate 'pleasure' of driving, it honestly felt like it was falling to pieces, and with my experience of 5 year old Grande Puntos which seem to be self destructing then I'm probably right.

The Mito in comparison felt miles ahead, much better build quality. Similar powertrains, low insurance and tax, and will hold their value much better - you just have to get over the startled Rabbit looks.

Do you live in the ghetto or something where drivebys are so common that insurance is appalling? or do you have convictions or claims against you as i'm 25 also and that piece of st costs £280 to insure, my MINI Cooper S only costs me £550ish.

Avoid that car like the plague, they are awful things and the depreciation is insane on them.

Get a fiesta Zetec S as someone else posted they are lovely little cars and won't depreciate so badly.
