petrol station - number plate recognition

petrol station - number plate recognition is not good enough at the reading M4 services. At least when it comes to bikes.

I was in a bit of a rush, just need to fill up and go. But they would not switch the pump on. After much waving one of their chaps came out and said they would not switch the pump on until I removed my helmet. It would not have been a problem it they had a sticker on the pump stating that helmets must be removed.

I will fill up elsewhere from now on!!!!!

Maybe I have been 'lucky' but have never been asked to remove Helmet to fill up.

I would take exception to this though, do people with caps, shades, Muslim head scarves, Turbans, beards etc. have to remove their 'disguise'.

I was told a few years ago by a garage owner that in 'drive-offs' the garage could claim back the tax/duty anyway so only lost the cost of the fuel - for a bike this would probably only be a couple of quid.

I would go to another petrol station. bo**ocks to 'em.

Ive never been asked to remove my lid either - though one attendant did point out that apparently it was illegal not to remove it, but he wasnt bothered if i kept it on.

I haven't a clue - just passing on what the chap told me. It's not something i'm worried about - I tend to leave my lid on, even when going in to pay if I can get away with it

I fill the Blade everyday and have never been asked to remove my lid. Only once has an old duffer asked me what pump I was at when there was no one else in the petrol station and I was on the bike with all my gear on. He said he wanted me to tell him clearly what pump I was at even though he could see through his 20 x 10 foot window

They do that no matter what...

Ive been asked that before while the only car on the forecourt, on a small garage with 2 pumps!

Some women once (was obviously in a strop about something) – kept saying, ‘sorry I can’t hear you through your helmet!’, when I was saying what pump number I was on. She could quite clearly hear, as I was only a few feet away, she then continued ‘You’ll have to remove your helmet’.

She then got the shock of her life, as I always wear a ‘sparco’ balaclava under my helmet, one of the ones with just the eye holes open. She looked terrified when she finally looked up, to find just 2 eyes bearing down on her from a balaclava.

I got off the bike once at a post office and was in a hurry,i just went in for a stamp and didn't even think of taking off my helmet(subpost office,never busy)walked stright up to the counter and asked for a stamp,her face drained of what little colour it had in the first place(Im in there most days lol) and she asked me to remove my helmet?She said oh it's you!,she thought i was going to rob the place she was quite upset,i think she must be getting balaclavas and sawnoffs mixed up with Helmets and 28p for a stamp.
