Thought it would be better to start a new thread ,it`s not fair on engineer1949.

I want to get rid of mine for a few reasons

1 Im going to fit an oil cooler, so it`s in the way

2 The pipe going in to the plenum is in the way, want to fit the coil pack bracket in this area .

3 Been told the Carbon canister works off the 14cux ECU to allow the vapours in to the plenum as an easy start and to get rid of the vapours .

Maybe the megasquirt does not work the carbon canister so it`s actaully doing nothing ..

If i decide to remove it can i remove the pipe and leave a flame trap close to the back of the car .
Will i notice the fuel evaporating ? and will there be a petrol smell. .

If it does act has an easy start will it effect it .

The carbon canister allows fumes from the petrol tank to escape safely during expansion and contraction of the fuel.

Mine never worked, I always suffered from the fuel tank trying to inplode as you use fuel and no air was being sucked in to replace it.

I binned mine and fitted a one way valve allowing air in when fuel is used.

Not ideal as it doesn't allow for the fuel to expand when weather is hot, maybe a flame trap would be better?

Early Griffs dont have one, well mine doesnt. There is some sort of inline valve just above the tank. I presume this is for breathing like Peter mentions. Mine from this valve just vents into the rear wheel arch via an open rubber pipe.

Ok my plan is to remove the vent pipe all the way to the carbon canister ,remove the canister then just fot a flame trap under the nearside rear wheel arch ..

Will it evaporate quickly ,don`t want to waste petrol ..idea

I havent noticed any evaporation problems Daz. What exactly is this flame trap for. Whats its purpose.

I am just wonder if that in line valve on mine, as well as for breathing is also something to stop petrol pouring out should the car get turned over. I am not totally sure what it does. Never inspected it too closely.

I think if the car turned over leaking petrol will save your relatives money as you will have a little TVR cremation!

You shouldnt whistle leak petrol around the tank area if your car unfortunatly turned over. [it wouldnt matter as you will probably be crushed anyway]

Serp Chims have a rollover/vent valve behind the tank. You have a vent pipe, usually coming from the inlet nozzle, or some other high point on the petrol tank, and this, is the feed, thru the rollover/vent valve to the carbon cannister.

This is how the tank "breathes" especially on hot sunny days.....[anyone remember those?]

In the event of the car turning over the valve closes so the petrol tank is now sealed.

Thats the theory of it anyway according to the bible.

And that is one theory i would not like to test.

One good point to note. The operation of the rollover/vent valve is the first thing to check if you are expieriencing pressure build up inside the tank.

Most 70's and 80's cars vented to atmosphere (except Japanese cars) with no problems at all wink it's only the whole eco/emissions thing that put the carbon canister in place, all my seventies Ford's were vented to atmosphere from the factory wink no nasty wiffs or evaporation cool if you roll the car the fuel will find its way out regardless rolleyes

If you roll a Chimp, petrol escaping will be the least of your problems and quite probably a blessing...

No need to do away with the CC on the strength of hanging coilpacks on the offside of the plenum 'though; plenty of room for a properly considered bracket without obstructing vac ports smile

I could suggest but that ridge will make it sting both on the way in and out...

If that means there's petrol vapour venting into the boot, and the release solenoid sparks, I guess it could be... hehe

Well I haven't gone bang yet , I'll have to watch opening the boot in petrol stations smile joking aside I was looking for some sort of filter to stick on the end of the vent pipe, that said I have never noted a fumes smell

Daz. Why are you putting a flame trap in the line.
