Think the option to take moulds off it might be of interest to a few folk, as a thread not too long ago seemed to indicate if a hardtop was available it would be welcomed

It won't be cheap if you look at the thread discussing the possible manufacture of these a fully finished one was on offer iro £1500. So with the potential to use this as a head start on a project basis to take moulds off it's valuable.

No harm asking, he says he is a PH'r, but he is in NZ, and box is $200 plus shipping, add VAT on the price he expects and it could all get out of hand...

What's the ballpark figures you'd expect firstly a mould to cost and then the unfinished GRP copies?

I was meaning what would you be thinking you'd pay?

Whatever the roof will cost you +

A proper mould will not be cheap, I'm guessing at least £2k.

Then decent weight blanks I'd guess £750 to £1k each

Not cheap

ETA I'd suggest you speak to Steve Edwards first he's the guy who'd done the nearest thing to this.

Before you bother could I suggest that you read this thread http://tinyurl.com/bp2h2hp It is now closed but goes on for 8 pages and covers much of what is involved in producing a hard top. In the end it died a death as peoples expectations of what it will cost are totally unrealistic. I may be cynical but this one will be no different!

Funnily enough the pic on the sales blurb is exactly the same one as the third one in that thread you have highlighted.

It wasn't just cost - there were a number of unresolved practical issues that were stopping people from committing.

It's not just a conventional hardtop, as you have to remove the fabric targa bits, so it means it's more restrictive in terms of how you can use it... (eg. if you're not at home, where do you store it if you wish to remove it? If you've removed it & it rains, then what? etc).

Its a fantastic shaped piece of kit, and improves the lines of the Chimaera IMO - but is more of a permanent fixture than a conventional "hard top" when you think of the restrictions it creates in terms of usage...

Those are issues that cannot be resolved with the TVR due to the design of the soft top and the physical size of a single piece hard top.

MB supplied a hard top with their SL cars but also designed a hood that vanished into the body so negating the requirement to remove the hood to fit the hardtop as would be necessary on the TVR.

The issue of where to store the roof was sorted by MB by having it as a dealer service and/or by selling a stand to keep it in at home, there is no other solution.

TBH Steve Edwards has already designed the best compromise by producing a split hard top that will go in the boot if removed away from home, so you have it with you if it starts to rain or you need to park up at night. The compromise comes when you want to put anything else of significant bulk in the boot at the same time.

I agree it wasn't just cost and yes it does look good, particularly self coloured as on the red racer. However, as both V8 GRF and yourself point out there are all sorts of practical complications. The only market I can envisage is for those who want to keep a hard top on their car virtually full time or want to finish up with a car that looks like a 2 seater Cerb with a RV8. There may be some but I doubt there are enough to make it a successful financial proposition.
