I need to buy myself a new car ("need"), and I can't help but want a MK1 MX5.
This is my current daily

But after buying my first house 2 weeks ago, and this thing needing a lot of work to keep roadworthy for its MOT in a few months I've decided the sensible option would be to take this off the road and keep it as a dedicated drift car.
I have a 22 mile daily commute, 90% of which is twisty A and B roads. The thought of buying a sensible FWD diesel eco box is just far too soul destroying and I've secretly loved mk1 MX5s for years.
So, will buying an mx5 be a smart decision for me? Fun, reliable and economical-ish enough for my daily commute? I'm already 90% convinced, not quite fully decided yet though...

It'll be the most reliable car you ever use as a daily driver (probably).
It'll get 30mpg (Which I doubt the current beast does).
You can have the top down as you commute and sunbathe in traffic on a cool summers morning.
Pop up headlights are cool (and your/friends kids will love them).

We ran one as a daily driver for 7 years (and only car for about 5). Best car I've had for the job.

Do it. Do it now.

30 mpg? Thats about double what i get out the bmw smile
It all sounds promising. I like the thought of something that handles really well, the TDS is a barge to say the least.
Also hoping to do a few drift days with the MX5

I agree with above.
At this time of year (and when constantly pissing it down) I ten to trundle around a fair amount in my 4x4 shed.
I drove the MX5 in to work yesterday though.

Had it 16 yrs, and still never tire of the fun it is. It will be fitted with pallbearer handles.

22 mile commute on Twisties ?
Do it. You might even end up owning a classic eventually.

Usual caveat is the only thing to kill these cars is Rust.
Great. My theory was buying one at this time of year should mean i get a bargain! Plus I love retro cars, and as you said, i know one day these will be considered classics

Just done the same, first day driving to work today and I think it was a great choice, even in the torrential rain. Can't argue with £300 classic insurance when non classic policies on mundane cars were coming in at £1k. biggrin

You won't get 30mpg on a 22 mile A/B twisty route. 25-28 is more likely. On a run you can get 30+ but not on those sorts of roads.
My daily commute is also 22 miles of twisty back roads but in my case it's all B-roads. I take the MX5 when I can but mostly I use an 03 Mini Cooper which is also a pretty good car. The MX5 is more fun but the Mini gives me 38mpg regardless of how I drive it whereas my supercharged MX5 can give me anything from 40mpg down to 20mpg on the road and 12mpg on track eek

ETA: Reading that back it sounds like I'm suggesting it would be a bad idea. I'm not, it's a very good idea! I'm just trying to add a little more realism to the mpg wink
