I'm looking to do a PCV licence and there's a good chance that either all or most of it is going to be paid by a local training company

however,

I dont want to take money if it means i'm not going to get a job at the end of due to having points on my licence which number at 15.

I'd lent my car to a "friend" to keep it clean and he'd got caught on camera twice. By the time the letter etc came through he'd done a disappearing act. so hence i was done for failing to provide driver details twice to a total of 12 points and i had three points from a previous speeding offence a year earlier. I've not been disqualified i would like to add

what i'm asking is with these 15 points would companies take on me as a driver or would it be slim pickings? I dont want to do it take money that could be beneficial to someone else - and then find out i cant get a job with it. On the other hand the chance of getting a PCV paid for most likely wouldnt arise again. the points still have three years to go till expiry.

I would say that it depends more on the way that you was going job hunting than the amount of points on your license, although I know of no one over 9 points. I could see you getting a job without to much hassle if you had already held your license for a couple of years and had a few mates already in the job who could recommend you, but you are obviously not in that position. Although I can only comment on the haulage side, a good amount of places hold insurance that covers anyone with a license regardless of age, how many points they have or what they were for.

Going on what you have said your chances of employment is slim, how long till you drop a few points? It will probably take you nearly 12 months to hold the license anyway if you are starting from scratch, with medicals, theory, lessons and then test.

thanks for the reply

i've been driving since 1998 so thats not a problem.

I've been racking my brain to get some contacts in this area - i've got a few mates who have mates in this so i'm going to be looking into that with regards to a job.

insurance wise - i'd assume it was a blanket fleet insurance rather than individual but i'm sure even then there would be restrictions

i got the points earlier this year in January so a few years left.

I'd be very surprised if an insurance company would touch you driving a bus with 15 points.

i just checked the licence and the law

gov website said:
4 years from the date of offence

In all other cases endorsements stay on your licence for 4 years from the date of offence.
so by that the sp50 - date of offence 23/12/2008 - i believe this means this will be gone in two days time?

the two MS90's - date of offence 07/2010 + 08/2010 - thats a bit of a longer wait till 2014.

anyway thanks for the reply gus. if i could find the guy who got me those points i'd fking kill the

You will be lucky if the TC (Traffic Commissioner) gives the DVLA the OK for you to have a PCV or LGV

One of the large companies round here won't take you on with more than 6 points - smaller ones tend to be less picky.

you get to have a lovely day in court where you can explain to the judge what the rammifications of a ban would be.

the result is a higher fine but a no ban and you cant use the same excuse should you get caught again

I've heard of smaller companies being less strict - not that i've found evidence on the contrary. 6 does seem to be the highest i've seen.

It is possible to get more than 12 points on a licence without it actually adding up to the 12 point ban !!

I a traffic stop reveals many thing wrong which can get points then only one of those points will count towrads the 12

Example - car stopped with 4 bald tyres each tyre getting 3 points so adding up to 12
although all 12 points show on the licence only 3 points counts towards the 12 for a ban

That is what DVLA and a couple of traffic cops told me what happens

My understanding is that if a CoFP would lead to a totting up ban, it cannot be offered, and you have to go to court. And that if there is more than one endorsable offence (ie bald tyres and mobile phone use) then either only one is ticketed, or a summons is issued. Happy to be corrected.

not much chance of a bus company taking you on, as the owner has to declare the points of each driver, and more points means their insurance policy cost is higher.
but good luck, As a bus driver I get £55 a day so money is poor down here{south wales} maybe better off doing class 2 lgv licence

I've read on a few forums that LGV seems to be a far better choice at the moment

Not at the moment, always been the way. This thread is a few years old but will give you an idea.

I used to do some work for Driver Hire in Accrington; money was crap but it's a start. Why not have a word with them before committing to either pcv/lgv?
