I hired a Toyota Auris Hybrid over the weekend which had a CVT Synergy drive transmission.

I know how the old DAF/Volvo system works with the cones and giant elastic bandsdrive belts... but how does a Toyota hybrid CVT work?

Also

Being part electric, the engine only started at around 30mph... so in a 40limit if you where behind a slow vehicle @ say 25mph the engine had to start and then rev reasonably high immediately from cold to give you the poke to over take... isn't that going to damage the engine?

I was taught to go easy until everything had warmed up.

Edited for clarity (I meant Toyota's Hybrid CVT Synergy drive system)

That link, Google and Bing don't work on my company laptop... or Video, music and they don't have disc drives either

I suppose I could wait until my shift ends and use my home PC at 03:00hrs

I'm not sure I understand the question if "The same as the Daf but with a better belt" isn't the answer.

The power train goes engine-generator-transmission-electric motor-wheels

Toyota haven't used a normal belt linked CVT (like Nissan) but have made their own system which uses... some other method which I can't find any info on on the Toyota web-site.

Toyota Synergy systems don't have a starter motor either apparently, and that's as much as my mechanic friend knows.

Late security shifts on empty industrial estates are boring... especially without decent internet access

I could be wrong. But as far as I'm aware it's not that.

It's a engine CVT wheels and along side that electric motor/dynamothingy wheels. Both operating in harmony.

I answered my own question when I got home... Toyota use what they call 'Power Split Drive' which is planet gears inside a ring gear

It goes; 4Cyl engine - 1st(MG1)electric starter motor/generator - power split drive - 2nd (MG2)electric motor - wheels

No rubber bands in sight... I dread to think what a replacement transmission would cost eek

i am probably wrong but i thought it went in a three way split arrangement of i.c.engine with torotrac cvt, electric motor and drive wheels
so that road speed increased from the average of i.c.engine speed(via cvt)and electric motor speed

i wish i could remember/explain better

Torotrak haven't even made a demonstrator CVT gearbox for engine to road wheels torque transmission, let alone a production car.
