Which engine oil for a LS7 V8
Discussion
Which fully synth oil grade and brand for a run in LS7 V8 565hp Ultima GTR for road driving and a few early season cold starts? Apologise for my ignorance on the subject, however as a newbie Ultima owner, I just want to make sure she is running on the best oil available. All intelligent advice appreciated. Thanks. Ult-Jim

Millers Nanodrive Synthetic triple ester based.http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-2021-millers-oils-nano...
I run 10W-50 in my blown LSX, depends how cold you intend to go you may want 5W-40
Others will chime in I'm sure.

recommended is5w30
We ran Mobil 1 in 5W30 which was fine for a short period of time, but due to the higher oil temps on track, the oil broke down after a few hours use and caused considerable damage to the engine (lots of metal was found in the oil). We sent it off for analysis and they said that it had simply got too hot and had broken down. I am sure it is fine for normal use.Interestingly we changed to a Joe Gibbs oil of the same grade and the running temperature of the engine dropped by 10 deg C - amazing what a difference it can make. This was tested on the same day, back to back. We have run the car for over 24hrs of race use with this oil and we have a massive reduction of contaminants in the oil.
In general a 5W30 should be fine for normal use - for track work I suggest a more track focused oil, and regular changes.

Does brand really matter?
Forget the brand, its the additives used that make the difference, a single ester based oil will break down quicker than a multi ester oil, some "brands" have a lot of detergent in them others less so, if you are racing the need for detergent is less because you will change the oil after a few hundred (or less) miles meaning there is less time for contaminants to build up providing the oil used is up to the task in the first place, Mac G found out the hard way that all oil is not the same (sorry Mr MacG) and the right choice is important for YOUR particular use. I use Millers Nanodrive because engine temps are significantly lower than the previous oil I used and there is no sign of metal in the old oil when drained.
