Treated the noble to a trip on the back on the AA truck!

Driving along, started mis-firing so I put it in neutral and the engine cut out, luckily I was able to cruise to a lay by.

It started up again but running really badly, and appeared to be smoking so I just shut it down and arranged to get it home. (Monsoon weather in Plymouth today so couldn't really investigate further). I started it again at home and managed to reverse it up my driveway (still mis-firing). Water levels appeared fine and nothing appeared to be wrong at a glance but it was still hammering down with rain so I locked up and called it a day.

I'm hoping for a break in the weather tomorrow to have a proper look but I have a feeling it's quite serious! Pretty gutted as I have only just got it back from having the stone chips repaired at the front. It has had a slight mis-fire for a month on and off, but it has been so intermittent I wasn't able to find what was causing it, it's a bit more permanent now though!

Anyway, one thing that does need addressing is the toe eye, it would appear it is made from cheese and it is now egg shape from being pulled up on the lorry. Any suggestions on a stronger replacement?

Hi Mat, I replaced my tow eyes with some shinny new ones from "worty" if I remember correctly. He got a group buy together some time back. I got them powder coated in Matt black. They are easy enough to copy the shape, I might still have the old ones kicking about somewhere.

Reverie do some in carbon but they are expensive.

I bought a rear carbon towing eye, can't remember if it was reverie or from Alex S on here but it is very good quality and I've had the car pulled onto trucks 3 times with it and not the slightest of marks on it.

Mat - easiest first task is to check your plug-gaps and/or replace them if they are old. Amazing the difference this can make!

Sounds like water has got in somewhere it shouldnt have. Do you have a 2nd car?

Is it 3.0 or 2.5?

Can you get a hair drier on the plug wiring

If the vacuum pipework that comes off the inlet manifold either has a leak or has got a blockage in it (which it can run like a pig).

On the 3l the pipework that comes off the inlet manifold can be pushed in too far meaning it gets blocked.

The plugs are only a couple of months old, I used the ones recommended on the wiki. Obviously I will check them all again when I get a chance to look at the car.

The car is a 3R, it could be a water issue, again I will check. It was driving fine and then it was as if someone through a switch.

I will also check the pipes for splits etc. and a good physical check before moving onto a compression check etc.

Is it common for coil packs to go? I guess I should be able to measure the resistance across the coil and see if there are any great differences?

Thanks for the suggestions so far,

Mat

Just been out and had a quick look, physically everything appeared to be fine so I tried to start it, fired up and it is running perfectly! After leaving it for 10 minutes I took it for a drive around the block and it didn't miss a beat.

That sort of rules out anything mechanical (for now) and would suggest water/ecu? I have a new fuel pump that I will fit over the Christmas period, time and drink permitting, but I don't think it is that.

Is there a common water ingress point or is it just a case of everywhere? Any other obvious things to check?

Sounds like it was water, But as Joust said it could of been the vacume pipe on to far and when you checked all the pipes you may of just freed it enough to unblock the airway.
