Did anyone here actually go on the Advanced Passenger Train

A friends son is mad on trains especially the APT so I have been collecting various bits and bobs for him but I just wondered if anyone here ever actually travelled on it ?

Never rode on one - but didn't it make people feel sick or something?

Seemed like it was technology 30 years ahead of it's time. I desperately wanted the Hornby model set of the APT though! But didn't get it

Theres one on display at Shildon railway museum in County Durham

I had a Hornby one and it had the same problems as the real one - it would sometimes hit trains coming the other way on tight corners as it leaned in!

It was technology 30 years ahead of its time - been on one of those Virgin Pendolinos? Same stuff underpinning it.

AIUI the sickness was due to the initial tuning of the leaning system. They were making the cabin lean a bit too much and that didn't agree with people IIRC. They fixed that and then everyone was pretty happy with it.

The Main Problem was getting the Processor power in a small enough package. These days an Iphone has more!!!!!

That's the prototype HST. The APT is at Crewe. You can see it from the north end of the station.

My grandad saw it Preston and nearly boarded but decided to go in the opposite direction reasoning he'd have plenty of chances. It was withdrawn shortly after!

Nope Examples of Both the APT-E and APT-P are at the NRM at Shildon. A Pendolino train on a Charity run, running a newer version of the system in the APT did Glasgow to London in 3 hrs and 55 mins. A APT did it in 3hrs and 52mins back in 1984.

Yes,
Travelled from Glasgow to Preston on one of the public proving runs. Standard fare, but you could sit in first class free.Have a pic of my son on it. The tilting sensation was weird at first but once it got up to speed it was really smooth

Except I doubt the real one ever met the LMS Duchess of Abercorn mail train coming the other way!

Never heard of this before. Discovered there is one just down the road from me at Crewe Heritage Centre. Somewhere to go next year
