Reading various posts recently made me think of this.

1) "In the past", people obeyed rules. If you weren't allowed to do something you just didn't do it. Self-policing approach, essentially.

In driving terms, these are those who obey red lights at 4am, stick to all speed limits, etc.

2) "In the 60s", the "if it feels good do it" approach began. If it didn't hurt anyone it was ok. Some self-restraint but a more pragmatic approach to rules.

In driving terms, drive according to the conditions, go through 4am red lights if you're sure there's nobody coming, etc.

3) "Now", "just do it" and who cares if it hurts anyone else. No self-restraint, no respect for rules.

In driving terms, undertaking then cutting in causing massive braking, going through red lights whenever you feel like it, deliberately choosing the wrong lane because it's quicker and then cutting in and " you".

I'm not saying everyone's a 3. Most people are in the 2 area generally, and some in 1. But I'm pretty sure there's an increase in 3s that doesn't bode well. Of course it's a society thing, not restricted to driving -- loud late-night parties, fly-tipping, etc. The thing is, you can't attack this problem just with gatsos and RLCs.

Another thing I would like to add about the category 3 merchants, is that when pulled up over something won't take "No!" for an answer. Always got to back chat then complain about attitude test failures.

Non-motoring example follows; the total no hopers who refuse to accept the judges decision that they are utterly useless and without any discernible talent on shows like X-factor, Pop Idol, Fame Academy etc (pls note I hate these shows but when you have teenagers in the house .... grrrr!)

Much of the attitude (not just for motoring) can probably be put to a lack of individual responsibility. Many people seem keen to blame to everyone and anything else but themselves for any problem with their life.

Absolutely..

NIMBY's....(not in my back yard)...

Complaints about speeding motorist by Mr Jones...later that week Mr Jones gets stopped for speeding...Mr Jones says.."What about my shed being broken into, the police weren't interested..hitting the motorist again.."..

bit O/T but had an argument with a family member about this earlier.

They complained about people udnertaking them all the time so I suggested that it was probably impossible for them to do this if they were in the correct lane....

Got undertaken this morning. My fault, took too long in overtaking a lorry and there was plenty of room for them to do so. Fair enough I am not going to complain
