MX5 forum hype...
Discussion
So as my venture into track day racing begins and having a history of german branded motors behind me (various bmws, vws, porsches) - indeed currently owning an e46 m3 and a porsche 996 - today i purchased a mx5.
It's a mk1 1.6.
Heard a lot of hype on this forum and given they can be picked up and ran for peanuts i thought i'd blindly given it a shot.
My verdict...
It is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC and the steering precisions feels like a little porsche (will know for sure when i've had more time with the car). The one i've got has a non-standard example, so not standard but it's not a million miles away from it.
If you're not able/willing to buy a Porsche and want a real budget bargain then the mx5 is a no brainer.
Buy one. Buy one NOW!
(if my feelings towards it stays the same the 996 will be sold!)

Good choice!
I've had my current MX-5 (2nd in total) for over 3 years now. I never thought I would keep a car for so long but I haven't yet been given a good enough reason to change it.
Reading a thread earlier about a PH-er wanting to finance a £60k car for £600 per month made me even more sure the MX-5 is a no brainer. £2000 to buy, never goes wrong, cheap to service, tyres at £40 a corner, relatively economical, and it has a Torsen Diff - makes spending £600 per month on anything else seem a little silly, especially as other cars aren't necessarily going to be any more 'fun' on the right road.
Turbo or supercharging is tempting, although one of the joys of the MX-5 is that it is so simple and so reliable. Adding a turbo, intercooler, various sensors and piping etc would just complicate that. If you want more power, then there are plenty of other cars out there.
I may buy a weekend car at some point down the line with more grunt, a TVR or perhaps something more exotic if funds allow. Regardless, I will keep the MX-5 as my trusty daily driver.
