CLC 200 CDI fuel consumption

Mrs dalenorth1 has a clc, which I decided to have drive in today, I was shocked at an average 30mpg.... I have a clk270 and average 45!
Could there be an issue, or anything I can do to improve the poor economy?
A friend told me to drive it in cruise mode, but as far as I'm aware the only difference cruise mode makes is pulling off in second gear?
