Yes,one is old enough to have seen it in period
(As a kid in the late 70's/early 80's, just how much money did I spend on "STREET MACHINE"?

The Loft ... Car and Car Conversions insulates mine .. the Clive Trickey books are on the bookshelf ... my guess is DSF 821L a red Mini is enjoying a well deserved rest in the great big car park in the sky ....
I remember hearing a loud crash outside the house late one night (the year was 1978...) There was a Mk 1 Ford Granada upside down having demolished the wall opposite. The driver had climbed out and looked a little shaken and stunned.
The car was adorned with wide wheels and "Pos a Traction" tyres ...
The police on attending looked at the wheels and tyres (now at eye height) and said "They didn't do you much f*&cking good did they lad !"

Yep,me too,1st issue of Custom Car i bought was in 1976 iirc.
I will still have it upstairs somewhere.
Lightweight!!I will still have it upstairs somewhere.

I bought issue 1 back in '69 or '70 in the paper shop on Blackhorse Lane, Woodside (nr Croydon) on the way home from school. Missed issue 2 but bought every one thereafter, until I got bored with the scene in about 1980.The early ones got thrown away by my folks after I got married and left home. The second hand car lot next door had a Piper GT for sale on the same day. Don't think I've seen another since, other than at shows.

I also bought Hot Car and Street Machine
Maybe me and my mates are a little out of touch with the modern world but we still drive cars like this...
Don't suppose any of you made it to the Romsey Boxing Day do yesterday? Everything from Anglias to a DB5 (?) and a 250/275. Anyone go? I was there in the Carlos Fandango Austin...
With a bit of Googling it turns out that the Ferrari was a 275GTB belonging to a James Martin who apparently is famous, a friend of Chris Evans and Jody Schecter and a Daily Mail columnist.

Love the illustration Chris.
My loft insulation sets out my entire motoring career:-
Practical Motorist (my Dad's) Hot Car, Custom Car, Cars and Car Conversions, Car (my company car era)
Practical Classics, Classic Cars, Now just the odd C&SC being added less and less frequently.
Subtract Practical Motorist then add Autocar and Motor and that's my loft insulation too My loft insulation sets out my entire motoring career:-

i was not old enough to buy custom car and SM until the 80's but I did manage to spend some money and had full collections of both up until my divorce in 2004 when the b
h dumped the lot
Ah! wheels on the outside of the arches, banded steel wheels, slot mag alloys, button velvet interiors, chain link steering wheels, metal flake paintwork and cars with their arses up in the air and their noses in the ground!
h dumped the lotHappy days!

Happy Days indeed !
In the distant past I was Staff Photographer for Hot Car and then moved to Street Machine from issue1 until I left in 1986
.I saw and photographed some wonderful creations , mostly involving shoehorning a V8 {normally Rover} in to some unsuspecting A40 or Mk 1 Consul, fitting "fandango" wheels and finishing off with a wild paint job ,perhaps incorporating a mural on two on the bonnet or boot.
The magazine itself was responsible for a few project cars.
For issue 1 we took a lovely Rover 3.5 Coupe, flared the arches, fitted side pipes, sprayed it metalflake blue and shod it with wide alloys and tyres complete with white lettering. Fab!
I remember taking it to a Classic Rover Club meeting. The members did nt share our enthusiasm,. Can t think why.
I got in on the act too when a mate wrote off his Mk 1 Golf and I picked it up for a couple of hundred quid. We turned it into a coupe with half vinyl roof ,opera windows, granada rear lights and four square headlights.
The interior was a masterpiece of late 70 s chic ,with four individual cobra seats covered in brown dralon. The doorpanels and centre console were also swathed in brown dralon with accents covered in tan elephant cord .
All finished off with dark brown shag pile carpet. Groovy! Oh I forget to mention it was an 1100cc not a GTI
We also managed to "improve" a PA Velox . and brand new Escort Mexico, the rest are probably best forgotten.
Happy Days !!

Unless someone was telling huge porkies - the Fandango Anglia was owned by Jeff Donnelly of Paragon Motors in Coventry.
Many years ago I turned up at Paragon for an MOT in some sort of Triumph.....just as the clock went round to 00,000.
Receptionist didn't want to put zero miles on the MOT - Jeff said she had to - that was the mileage.
Jeff's one of the good guys BTW - look him up if you are in Cov.

That's when I started to read the custom car mags, Street Machine and Hot Car from round about 1979/80. I remember the blue Rover coupe and green Golf and the "Minder" Escort which was jacked-up for a handling experiment. Henry Hirise too. And a shortened VW combi-bus. Street Machine had a great page each month with drawings of ideas for cars, Motorvation I think it was called, really creative and drawn by an artist who obviously had lots of knowledge of the US custom car scene. Must have a look in parent's garage loft, may be some boxes of old copies of very early 80s Street Machines there. Hot Car was a great read each month too but it changed in early 80s.In the distant past I was Staff Photographer for Hot Car and then moved to Street Machine from issue1 until I left in 1986

To anyone who could post relevant material -
Have been looking for a copy of the 1981 Hot Car road test of the then recently introduced Capri 2.8i, I think it was the October 1981 issue. Capri was BHK 571X, graphite-grey over stratos silver 4-speeder. I owned this car for a short while and had the mag but passed it onto the new owner around 20 years ago. I don't need to see the whole mag but if anyone could post the road test that would be great and would be much appreciated
