Xbox and PS3 fan directions

I want to tidy up and rearrange the boxes under the tv, I know the main fans blowing out of the fat ps3 and 360 blow out of the back, but does anything important blow in or out of the side vents (they're both laid flat, not stood on end). Is it ok to put them side by side, and how much of a gap would you leave between them?

I think they're just there for extra cooling. I wouldn't block them up, especially if both consoles are MK1.

Lying on its side, the vents on the right hand side (on top if standing up) of my full fat PS3 get pretty hot, as well as at the back.
