Hi,
I have decided to take the plunge in Feb/March and buy a 55/06 plated 997C2S.
This is a bit of an unusual request but does anyone have a similar car and live near Hitchin in Hertfordshire that wouldn't mind spending a few mins taking me through a physical car, explaining good points/bad points etc in exchange for a cuppa.

A bt of a strange request but I find that ts much nicer hearing from an actual owner as opposed to a dealer or someone who is trying to sell theirs.

In the meantime, Happy Christmas to everyone.

I bought an '05 997 C2S from OPC Bolton in February this year. Traded our 986s Boxster in on it which we'd had for 3.5 years and was purchased from the same dealer.

I'm in Blackburn - so not on your doorstep. Feel free to ask away on here or via pm.

There's been two incidents with the car: Mrs FarQue drove it through a deceptive pot-hole which resulted in two written off tyres and wheels and some minor sill damage. Not the cars fault by any stretch of the imagination, and quickly sorted.

The other problem I've had was a broken o/s/f suspension spring - driving along I heard a sound like a gun shot and stopped to find a coil broken clean off the aforementioned spring. Drove home no problem and Porsche Assist recovered the car from home to Bolton. OPC Bolton changed both front springs but wanted to charge me for the priviledge until I whinged to Porsche GB (car is covered by used car warranty) who decided to cover the cost.

During the year we've driven over to Germany and had a pootle around the 'Ring, plus there's been several trips/week-ends away. Gawd knows how me and her have managed to clock-up about 7000 miles in a 'toy' car.

I'm still not totally at ease with the handling vis-a-vis the very benign Boxster but I do love the car very much. However, Mrs FarQue misses the open top option of the Boxster - the 911 is a coupe, I couldn't live with the looks of ANY 911 cabriolet.

Look for something with full service history.
Sports shift kit is - IMHO - better and it was one of the first things I changed on my car.
PSE is a nice to have - if you can find one with it.

Watch out for leaking rocker covers at this age. Also belts and general seals / gaskets might be starting to get a bit leaky. Factor in for a few bits like battery - at 8 years if its not had one then it might well be needing one if not this winter then next. Suspension parts like bushes tend to be pretty decent on the 997 so you wont have to worry too much just yet.

The drivers seat might be a little worn, and I find the drivers door card can often wear. Same with the gearknob. The rest of the interior wears well.

Clutch - depends on miles.. but again IME they last well - same with brakes. But both can be expensive to replace esp if you go OPC..

Check its got its tool kit, tyre seal (make sure its not gone off) and warning triangle etc.

HTH!

Many thanks for the useful hints and tips.
I'm busy reading as much as I can find on the forums and trying to keep a level head although the nearer it gets to purchase time it will be difficult.

One thing that would put me off straight away would be a worn drivers seat although I appreciate that this can be replaced/recovered. Also the PSE is a must have option.

I'm still trying to get hold of a copy of the definitive guide to 997s but it seems to have gone out of print.

Are you going to look for an OPC car or a non OPC?

I have an 06 C2S which I have owned for almost 4 years. I think the fact I have owned it for so long is testament to how happy I am with it as I tended to change cars about every 2 years. I bought it from Harbour Cars in Chichester and apart from a couple of niggles which they sorted promptly the only problem has been the battery which I replaced last Christmas, even though it had a new one when I bought it. This is most likely due to the fact I don't use it during the week so can't complain. I also bought it from Halfords and fitted it myself as I do not believe on the OPC warranty. I have had it serviced by the book with OPC Byfleet and have had no surprises. In fact as it needs servicing every 2 years it is cheaper than my previous M3. I live the other side of London so not local I am afraid.

Good points - performance, reliability, build quality, noise (PSE), looks
Bad points - awful satnav, electronic oil level a bit irritating, key fob sometimes opens bonnet accidentally

The bad points were a bit of a struggle...

Mine is a manual coupe.

Enjoy the search and good luck. Buy from a reputable dealer or OPC and get the warranty if the doomsayers worry you. It didn't bother me.

OPC may just be beyond my budget but there are a few that fit the bill either private on indies around the £27 mark or thereabouts.

Many thanks, I did look at a 2 year old M3 but the mpg is seriously low and that did put me off.

There is a fix from Porsche for the key. Basically changes the internals.

OP'
I am in exactly the same shoes an budget as you.
RSJ motor sport seems to carry A LOT of these in the range we share.
I am shooting myself a little in the foot as I getting arsey about the spec I want in this my ultimate frivolous expenditure.

Let me know how you get on please with the CD from / info on 997s.
I bought the wee booklet on the 996, when I thought I was looking at 996 Rarga purchase.

(Now I have seen a lovely spec'd 997 Targa 'just' above budget frown oh crap.....)
Hi, there seem to be a few of us looking in this price bracket.
RSJ do seem to have some nice ones and I will be eagerly looking at their stock at the end of Feb.
I now need to practice what I preach and take my time, stick to the spec that I require (although not finalised yet), I want it to be right as its my intention to keep the car for a while.

I have also ordered an original 175 page brochure on the 2006 model and can't wait for this to arrive!

sorry for the plug but I have a basalt black 997.1s which has done 50k miles that I am going to put on sale in a couple of weeks time.
I bought the car from Leeds OPC as an approved car in 2009 with the extended warranty and continued to extend the warranty which just expired in dec 2012. Only one other previous owner other than the OPC.

All services were carried out by an OPC. All tyres have 5/6mm. Minor service was done at Byfleet about 5 months ago. New clutch fitted in Feb 2012. Front pads and discs changed last year.
Car has Sat nav, bose and a years cover of Porsche Assistance. I think about 5 months left on the road tax and Mot was done just a couple of weeks ago.
I would take £26.5k for the car as it has no PSE.

Interesting to see a brochure where / how did you source?
For example, I have seen one wit a glass sunroof. Not sure they did those?
Bought it from a collector on EBay. Hopefully it will arrive in a couple of days and I will be able to see what it should have and what are extras.

201CHY,
A bit early for me and a little high on miles (for me) but from what I have seen in the past few weeks you will have no problem selling it.

thank you.

Nope no sunroof. options wise it is a bit thin. I just wanted it to be manual, black, have a good stereo and sat nav. Most important thing with no prior P car knowledge was piece of mind that the car was clean so paid OPC premium. After trolling these forums subsequently it seems that there are a few indis who are equally if not even better.

Also came from an M3-e46...different beast this one...really felt like I learned how to drive.

unfortunately work now dictates I go for a diesel that I can put some motorway miles on.

Well my 'brochure' arrived this morning . I shouldn't really call it a brochure as its a hard backed book detailing all models, colours, specs and factory options from the 2006 models and was available as a brochure at the Porsche dealers for 'serious' customers.

I have the feeling that when I have finished reading it I will have finalised the spec I will be after. Well worth the money!

Took the plunge last month and have a Jan 2005 997.1 S2 and am in Leighton Buzzard if that helps and yes also got a late 2004 'brochure/book' on the car and a 997.2 in readiness for my next one! The car was a demo, then spent 5 years in Glasgow and the last two years in Swansea.

Nice spec - arctic silver, tiptronic, ocean blue leather, sun roof, electric and heated seats, cruise, rear parking sensors, satnav, phone module, BOSE, 6 CD and self dimming mirrors. A whopping £73,600 new!

Been to JZM to have the bores checked and they are all OK. Phew! Car has a full OPC SH to 09/12 and has had quite a bit of work done under the OPC warranty which is gratifying (in the last 2 years it has had front and back shocks, air con condensor, steering rack, coolant expansion tank and rear screen all done!). Mileage has just gone over 44K. I have had the alloys refurbished and am waiting for a nice dry day to take photos. Also had the Gundo hack done in Uxbridge and that makes her sound so very nice!!

Engine number seems to be in the pre M12 nut IMS series but was willing to have RPM in Long Marston change the IMS/RMS and they then checked with HO (with the car waiting for the job to be done) to be told definitely an M12 nut. This has further been confirmed by the dealer in Cardiff that supplied the car as new and have serviced it for the last 2 years). Am so hoping it behaves!! Drives great and even got it to 32mpg on a gentle drive down to Brighton!!
