I fancy some pain, it will be my garage torture toy.

I was planning on just jumping on and pumping away for an hour or so a few times a week (fnarr fnarr). I'll be picking up a trainer tyre for my mtb too.

Do people just listen to music or stick a video on? There seems to be some hype about SufferFest, I can't figure out what it is, is it just a load of riding videos? (I might be being very very thick!). What makes some people love it?

Cheers

Focus on my heart rate and obeying my Garmin Edge, but I have to concentrate more as I'm on rollers so can still fall off.

I've not tried sufferfest, I just pass the time watching telly on my iPad by downloading stuff on the bbc iplayer app. I put a small shelf up so that I can put the iPad at eye level just ahead of my handlebars using a bit of wood I found in my shed.

It works for me and I usually do about 5-6 hours a week. I've done this for about 3 months now and I'd like to say I've lost a bunch of weight but I weigh exactly the same as when I started! Not a problem though as my fitness has improved massively, my legs are a lot stronger, my clothes are looser and I've had quite a few comments from people that I look slimmer. I guess the weight has just been moving from the belly to my legs.

The turbo trainer is quite loud so I wear headphones in order to hear whatever I'm watching. I have to use an extension lead for this purpose so if you've not got one you may want to invest.

Cheers for the comments.

I was planning on going the way of either the MP3 player or a film on the ipad. Should help brighten up the dark garage atmosphere!

Just didn't know if I was missing a trick.

I use this www.trainerroad.com - loads of workouts and entire plans. You can either follow a plan (usually around 8 weeks) or choose workouts based on criteria such as intensity, focused power zone etc. Your rides are saved & can be accessed via the local client or the web & the simple analysis lets you see improvement etc. You can also download the ride data for import into other sites like Strava & Garmin connect.

I "love" it because I've averaged 5.5 hours a week for the last 2 and a bit months of good quality, structured training. If I'd not had the turbo I'd would have struggled to get out especialy as I do not find it fun riding in the rain, howling wind & the dark.

The combination of chasing the target power dot on the screen and MTV works to alleviate the boredom of endurance mileage on a trainer, if you're bored doing the other sorts of workouts (threshold etc) then you're not pushing hard enought.

This looks interesting!

Do you use a 'sender' sensor for the bike and a USB receiver for the computer?

Yes - I have a Garmin cadence/speed sensor, a Garmin HR strap & the Garmin ANT+ USB stick. Very simple to set up, has been reliable...

Has kept me on form when it's too dark and wet to go out.

I go on groove shark, build up a playlist, starting off with smooth chilled stuff, followed by deadmau5 usually,( good cadence rhythm and long tracks), then some racey stuff to do some sprints, and then 10 minute cool down.

Probs only do 50 minute sessions, but I really try and push my sprinting and high cadence stuff.

Stick a good desk fan in front of you or you will roast.

I also in clip one leg, and try and do 30 strokes with my left leg, then swap feet. Rinse and repeat x10, focussing on good form.

Then when you go back to both legs your spinning will feel much smoother and faster.

Funnily enough I picked one up from Decathlon on Boxing Day.

1st use was last night, had a play for an hour - Christ you sweat!

I have it set up in the dark, dank garage, for the last 30mins I was steaming, literally!

Decathalon were selling the pro box set with the mat for £130 which is incredible value.

I have a Tacx Satori (Identical to the pics above) and its a decent bit of kit. Its got plenty of resistance and its not too loud, level 10 will literally kill you.

I have mine set up in my Home Cinema room (Infront of a 120inch screen), I generally chuck a film or a Youtube playlist of music videos on and pedal away for a while.

You'll have to turn the volume up when you get the cadence up, but play about with the resistance and find the right gear and you'll get a good workout with minimal noise from the trainer.

I have a couple training DVDs which arent bad, although I typically like to do my own training for my own goals.

I also picked up the bag http://www.wiggle.co.uk/tacx-satori-trainer-bag/ which is perfect for chucking it in the car.

That's what I picked up, good quality kit (including the mat, which was suprising).

Although I did have to fix the resistance shifter- it was reading L10 when it was actually at L1 and L9 when it was at L10, if that makes sense.
