Well, I've been a long time lurker, i.e. not registered, and thought it about time I shared my project(s).
I've grown tired of the 'scene' on the VW forums. I much prefer and enjoy the atmosphere on here and the awesome variety! People actually into cars, and building them, themselves. Truly inspired by a lot of threads on here.
Well, this is my current little project. As the title a Mk1 Gti.
It's of a select group being a relatively scarce colour Helios Blue; before it went all pearlescent purple/ 90’s chic on Mk2's and soft tops.
I've had progress threads in the past on another forum or two, but stopped because of not enjoying the forum’s due to people's arguments, and politics? developing in some.
So, on with the pictures.
When I first acquired it.

As can be seen by the pictures it has a mish-mash of paint colour combo's, and generally was a tad tatty.
With the best intentions I wanted to make it standard and mint! But being 20/21 when buying it, a focus on adding power soon crept into my mind. Sadly on reflection I acted upon that impulse, but not after stripping the engine down and finding in a polite way it was foobared! Along with the clutch and linkages.

Stripping:

So being a VW there was quite a bit of things in the parts bin from the 90's and 00's that could upgrade bits including the engine. As well as some uprated bit's and bobs.

I settled on an engine after flirting with a 20VT, a G60. It has a certain character to it.
Namely this! It’s supercharger.

As it stands currently! After some home DIY painting.

Running, without the exhaust connected.

Anyway, that’s everything so far I think. More updates in due course I hope. I'm sure there's a load I've forgotten to add.
But! Thanks for looking, and I look forward to your views on it.
Cheers,

Love the non bumpered look, i remember driving a g40 polo back in the day, that was a laugh!.
They can look good without the rear number but not that practical for a daily. You only need little more than a tap from someone and you're in to needing both rear quarters and a rear panel.OP, was Helios blue a standard colour on the Mk1 or has it been repainted?
It looks a great car either way, hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for all the complements guys!
as I kept the original 'box for the short ratios.
Yeah rear bumpers back on, it doesn't offer much protection overall, but from the right angle's suits the car
you wouldn't believe how loud with the big adapter/ filter. lets people know you're in the near vicinity
There's a few niggly things to sort, and some sunshine before I can enjoy it fully

Looks great to me! Bet it goes pretty well with the 'charger fitted? Is it out of a Corrado? Pretty easy fit?
Think you have got the look just right without going too max power! Has the rear bumper been refitted?
Yeah goes really well, super amount of torque for a light/ 800kg ish car! Spins up into 3rd gear if thats an indicator. Yeah engine's a PG variant from the Corrado, couldn't find a 1H from a rallye at the time. In terms of fitting just the mount for the engine needed changing Think you have got the look just right without going too max power! Has the rear bumper been refitted?

Any motor that's more "go" than "show" is fine by me. Nice to not see the reasonably well trodden 1.8 turbo route too. Does the supercharger make a properly loud whine? That's important.
Yes it is

Yep Helios Blue was an original Mk1 colour, towards the end of its model life. Along with Lhasa green, as one of the metallic options. It shouldn't have any reflective purple in for the Mk1, so a silver/ blue. Rather than the later sort of reflex purple/ blue like mk2's etc.OP, was Helios blue a standard colour on the Mk1 or has it been repainted?

Great project you've got there. I've a soft spot for the mk1, having had plenty in the family over the years.
One question though: why did you not refit the twin lights in the grill? I think they look much better than the single light.
I change my mind on the whole twin light grill. I like both. Kept the wiring for it just in case on my loom. One question though: why did you not refit the twin lights in the grill? I think they look much better than the single light.
Just not sure if their fogs or spots on mine as they've never worked

Might be a little job for the weekend.

They're awesome little things. Have become too attached to mine now! Can't imagine getting rid of it, even though it’s not been used that much yet.Your's looks like a real nice example, I would change it as you want. But keep the original bits if re-sale is an issue for you.
But enjoy it
that’s the main thing, a great nimble chassis.Time for a sort of update.
I've been collecting a few bits for the Mk1.
New dash, as my old one's cardboard heater fixings broke

Pretty mint dash minus the bits that will be swapped out from my old one.
Got a new front wing to replace the pattern one, that's a good inch bigger than an original
Also a S1 rear panel aka, small lights!

Not sure if ill go through with the change though.
Also, engine's out again. Not sure why though, something to do over christmas?

Allowed me to re-do engine-bay brake lines, and renew the steering tie rod/ track rod ends + rubber boots.
Also, had the wheels re-furbed, they were in dire condition when I got them. Went for a gun metal colour, not sure if it goes but will see when the Mk1 gets its re-spray.
The shop I chose have done an awesome job though, would recommend them if anyone needs them doing in S.Yorks.

Golf looks a bit tatty, need to get motivated on it.

Now for the reason I have neglected the Mk1 the last month or two. Got a new car
A bit of an upgrade from my Millennium Edt./ Yellow Mk1 Ford Focus and its 1.8 16v 150k miles and it was still going and pulling through the gears.
To this, 08' Audi S3 with 42k Miles. Needs a clean though

Oh yes, heated bucket seats!;)

Them both together,

There wont be any progress on the Golf for a month or two, mainly due to the S3 needing:
5 year cam-belt change
x4 New tyres - 145 each
New windscreen, as a nice chip has appeared in front of the steering wheel
But it has a Revo stage 1 map I believe from its receipts. Its a hoot to drive, and I've averaged 30mpg to work
As always, comments, suggestions always welcome.

Two lovely motors.
A G60 is a fantastic motor, I'm clearly biased as I have one to and it was refreshing to see a thread without the usual rubbish about "grenades", 20vt is better blah blah.
Is your G60 standard? My best bits of advice with G60s is to replace the pulley belt every year , use good oil and renew the oil feed from the sump>charger.

G60 went for a rebuild, and a fettle/ smoothing, stage 4?. So will be flowing a bit more than original. A G60 is a fantastic motor, I'm clearly biased as I have one to and it was refreshing to see a thread without the usual rubbish about "grenades", 20vt is better blah blah.

Has a 65mm pulley on it currently, although looking at a toothed kit for it, replaced all associated parts as a precaution on it. So oil feeds, belt, seals etc is new.
Its a shame the G60 has such a rep for blowing up, all it needs is a bit of maintenance and understanding every 20-40k.
