Hi I have 15k to spend on a car but need some help deciding on what. So far I have thought either an Evo 8 or 9 the thing putting me off that is the upkeep like brakes etc. Also was looking at 125i or 135i.

Please help!

You need to give us your requirements. Anyone can spend that £15k for you but it doesn't mean the car will do or be what you need/want.

If brakes etc feel like they are going to cost a fortune, then so will tyres, especially on something like an M135i.

You'd be better off spending a bit less and leaving something for consumables. Have you thought about a £10-£12K elise and £3k in tyres etc (which it will get through slower because it doesn't weigh as much to start with) ?

For £15K, if you ignore upkeep, you're into M5 territory in terms of buying but as the old saying goes, it's still a £60K motor when you need to fix it. That goes for lots of stuff - porsches etc.

Have a think about what you can spend on a year to year basis as well as the initial outlay. What's acceptable?
That's more of a limiting factor, so in order to get a sensible reply that's something we would need to know, really.

Edited for typoes.

I'd go for a £10k S2000 and keep the rest for keeping it in tip top condition.

I would say pony power is more important than luxuries. I would say I would have around 3-4k a year for upkeep. I have always wanted an evo its just they are getting on in age now.

Sorry, handn't realised we were playing the PH meme game. How about:

Use an MX5 to get a member who isn't a lawyer to post legal advice relating to a private car sale where the buyer has come back 6 weeks later with a list of faults to provide advice on how best to throw a can of redbull at a horse rider who was performing a powerslide past a speed camera near a school policed by unmarked traffic police posing as a neighbourhood speed awareness scheme's organising committee, consisting of children who run a kangaroo court-cum-casino where a roll of the dice decides how many points you get on your license, which is or isn't good enough for you to tow that much behind your car with, while deciding which car to buy that has to be good in snow (even though you don't live near snow) but which will be sold on winter tyres just in case it drops below 7C because that's the law in some places where they get actual snow.

Buy one.

If it's no good, sell it and buy something else.

Do you any experience in an evo? Any ideas on what model to start with? Fq300 seem to be a decent price. Do you have any idea of the running costs?

I've not personally owned one, but I've been a passenger in a couple. A close friend of mine likes replica rallycars (he's currently scooting about in an RB320).

My impression of his old FQ320:
  • Interior is crap, but IMO pretty much all Japanese cars are similar. You definately don't buy them for the interior.
  • Ride is very firm, quite crashy. Handling is quite good.
  • Fuel economy is catastrophic. This wouldn't be a big deal but because it's got a tiddly fuel tank the range is shocking (under 200 miles). This is a dealbreaker for me - I hate having to plan routes based on where you can find petrol.
  • It's no fun at legal speeds
  • It's no fun unless you're pressing on.
  • It's a very very poor car if you're ever in traffic.
  • My mates' car always seemed to be in the garage. Googling that, the service interval is every 4500 miles (engine oil and diff oil change).
  • The car ate lots of tyres.
That's all pretty negative stuff - the plus side is that it's very, very fast at cornering. It's good on the brakes too, but tbh for the "EVO!!!-ness" of it, I expected it to be quicker in a straight line - it's just under 5s to 60, but it's not a light car (about a tonne and a half) so the 300-odd bhp only gives it 200-ish bhp per tonne.

Mate you have been a huge help! evo is off the list now. Sorry to be a pain but have you been in or had any time with a monaro vxr. Always liked the look and except for the mpg I am partial to a v8

If you are after a V8, a B7 RS4 is just started to drop into the 15k zone
