Sri Lanka - anyone been?
Discussion
The o/h and I are getting hitched next April and are looking for honeymoon destinations. So far we've narrowed it down to two potentials - Thailand and Sri Lanka.
We know a few folk that have been to Thailand so have plenty of info available on that, but nobody that's been to Sri Lanka. Looking for experiences, recommendations, things/places to avoid, any useful info basically. Anyone able to help at all?
Thanks in advance,

We had our honeymoon in Sri Lanka and loved it. We did a Kuoni tour with a few days at a resort at the end. Personally I get bored sat around doing nothing so the tour kept me happy and meant we both got to see lots of sites and wifey didn't have to listen to me moan about being bored!
The tour guide was fantastic. He emailed my wife a few months ago saying he's set up his own tour company. I can dig out the details if you like?

Get south beyond the Benidorm, sorry Bentota strip and you'll find places like Galle and Tangalle offering a great mix of British Raj or unspoilt beaches, with surf too if you like that sort of thing. Don't be put off by the pollution and madness of Colombo. Sri Lankan folk are great.
Nice one, thanks folks. It is Kuoni we're looking at booking through, the chap we spoke to there said Sri Lanka was one of his favourite countries in the world. High praise indeed but I never take a salesman's word for it first time, just wanted to find folk that have been there and see what's what. Thanks VTECJ, yes if it's not too much trouble to look out the details of that tour guide then that may be useful
He recommended a whole tour but we're not keen on moving to new accomodation every day or two, we really wanted to have a few days somewhere "beachy" to chill after the wedding etc and a few more days somewhere around a city with lots of stuff to see and do. Happy to do day trips and stuff, just not keen on packing up and moving out more than once or twice on the trip. Thanks Blackpuddin for the recommendations on beachy places.
We did consider India but ruled it out - can't remember why, think that was more the mrs. call than mine. We looked at and ruled out a lot of places to get this far, really not keen to introduce new alternatives at this point, but thanks for recommending Kerala - I'll bear that in mind for future holidays

We went in Sept. There were monsoon downpoors but they were short and sharp then the sun was back out. It was hot but not too silly. I forget the temperature but guess mid 30s?
Maybe boring but we were thankful that we had a tour guide to take us to the nice hotels etc. rather than having to chance it. If you go anywhere on foot you're bombarded with people pestering you to buy stuff or offering to carry stuff or show you around etc. That was the only annoying thing really. So if you are after a beach holiday I'd try and find a hotel with a private beach.

The two hotels that stick in my mind:
Yala Village Hotel: http://www.yalahotel.com/

We're getting married in May and are going to Sri Lanka for 4 nights before heading onto the Maldives for 10. This was booked through Kuoni.
Never been to either before but in Sri Lanka we have a driver and plan to visit a few sites before moving on for the relaxing part of it. Can't wait.

Well thanks for all the help everyone - we booked the Sri Lanka trip with Kuoni last night and are really looking forward to it. We've got 4 nights chilling out near Colombo, 6 days and nights of sightseeing at various places inland then another four nights chilling out down near Galle in the south. Got a decent deal flying to and from Glasgow with Emirates so really looking forward to it.
Thanks again for all the info and feedback, much appreciated
