Recommend me some PC games...
Discussion
Just bought a new graphics card for my PC. It's of modest spec so not looking for anything outstanding (graphics wise) to buy but want something to atleast put it through its paces.
I've not really been into PC gaming for years. Owned an Xbox since 2007 so most of my gaming has been done on that.
Not really sure what I'm looking for but the sort of games I like are simulation games where you can build things (roller coaster tycoon was a big favourite of mine and still is, sim city etc.) but I also like strategy games like Age of empires where you can build but actually do something with what you've built.
I also love FPS games but like them with a decent story. Something like Half-life really appeals to me (I already have Blackmesa). Fallout 3 was amazing on the Xbox. Really got sucked into it and am still playing it now.
I've got a Steam account and have had a browse through it this morning but nothing has really jumped out at me as something I want to spend money on to play.
Anyone got any recomendations?

Supreme Commander is a little old, but excellent IMO. Supreme Commander 2 was a little dumbed down, but still enjoyable especially with a few friends on multiplayer. Will be very cheap on Steam!
The Dawn Of War 2 series is also very, very good. Not much in the way of base building (which you said you liked) but it is enjoyable nevertheless. Again, will be cheap on Steam in the January sales.

Some good cheap ones there sufficiently old enough to play well on a good video card PC but still at high levels of detail

Cheers, will look into some of those.
Fallout new vegas I have on Xbox already. Never got into it as much as F3.
Supreme commander is great, as you say. I bought it on xbox after realising it was made by the same guy that made Total Annihilation. Also as you say, 2 was dumbed down but the graphics were good

t. There is no strategy to the game, its just move into cover, kill everything in range, move into cover, kill everything in range etc. Not a patch on DoW1, so I really wouldnt waste your money on this.Could try Planetside2 (fps) as well, it's free-to-play - www.planetside2.com
How about Skyrim? It starts out looking pretty amazing, but you can add various graphical enhancements. Definitely not a pure shooter though.
If you like making things, then nothing beats Minecraft. Minecraft itself is very basic, almost like Lego. If you add something like Technic or FTB, then it takes it onto an entirely different level.
The Steam sale is on, so have a look for yourself: http://store.steampowered.com/

Metro 2033 has incredible atmosphere and solid story.Anyone got any recomendations?
Deus Ex Human Revolution is very good if unable to live up to the original.
I'm replaying HL2 with the Cinematic mod it looks amazing.
And Mechwarrior online is free and a fun sim/shooter hybrid.
And Just Cause 2 is hilarious destruction with apparently an awesome multiplayer mod that I haven't tried yet.

Cheers for the suggestions!
New card in and I'm impressed so far. As said, it's of modest spec but delivering outstanding performance on blackmesa.. Max detail on everything, 1920x1080 res and not a judder in sight.
I know it's hardly a benchmark to go by but considering its a £65 xfx radeon 7750 2gb running on a 2.8ghz core2duo, I'm impressed

I'm also running an ENB plugin on Black Mesa (on Skyrim, Fallout 3 as well as Black Mesa) - http://www.enbdev.com/
Something else to try and test the graphics card out.
ENB Off

ENB On, darker creepier better lighting.

ENB On, lobby, natural lighting.

ENB for Black Mesa
http://www.enbdev.com/download_mod_blackmesa.htm
Preset from here + other screenshots - http://enbseries.enbdev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=...
Installation tips ad from page above.
Copy all preset files to game root directory where hl2.exe is - steamapps/username/source sdk base 2007/ folder
Copy just the d3d9.dll from Black Mesa ENBSeries 0.076a to game root directory AND to bin directory. (same folder as above + bin folder in source sdk base 2007) I also put it into the BIN folder in sourcemods/BMS/Bin just to be sure.
SHIFT + F12 turns it on and off in game.
As well as lighting, ENB can add depth of field and SSAO effects.
