Not sure if common but on my 08 cooper s it's been in and out of the workshop quite a few times in the year I've had it. The first was a gearbox mount, then thermostat housing, steering lock packed up, heater not getting as hot it used too, timing chain tensioner which has started to rattle again and the latest is hunting at idle and a bad hesitation when you pull away from cold, almost kangarooing effect. This has been put down too a build up of carbon on the valves a cylinder head so that's going to need stripping down and rectifying.
Fortunately it's all been done under the brilliant bmw warranty.
Putting these silly faults aside the cars a hoot to drive and good fun.
Make sure the recall has been done on the turbo water pump.

Noisy chain caused by either:
Tensioner (most likely and not a big job)
Chain (hopefully not this)
Sat Nav Issues- aerial can become corroded and stop the GPS working
Plug changes need to be on cue (just like any powerful turbo tho really its not a fault)
Cant think of anything else off the top of my head atm?

My R56 was PX'd close to the 50K mark. Close to the 50K I had a number of issues:
Gear shift selector started to not want to engage certain gears (I ended up having to skip 3 and at times 4th). Thankfully reverse was still good.
The high pressure fuel pump decided to give way and the engine management light came on in red.
The chain was changed twice due to excessive ticking.
The coolant pump had to be replaced in tandem with the high pressure fuel pump. Engine was getting VERY HOT even on short journeys.
THe coils needed changing once, again the engine management came on but in amber and after temporarily switching off the reset would happen only to come back again a few miles particularly at motorway speeds. Very unpleasant when passing a vehicle and the power from the engine goes to get home mode.
I strongly suggest that you purchase a warranty on parts and labour, in my case I had the XTLC pack.

Cheers Adam, I didn't know about the water pump recall. What size wheels do you have? I'm 'Lusting' after a pair of 18" JCW wheels that I've seen but am a bit worried about the ride quality.
I just have the 17" wheels. Would love a set of JCW wheels. The ride quality is ok, just gets choppy over harsh bumps but that's due to the run flats.
I have a 2010 JCW on optional 18" rims (r113 style). It had run flats (Pirelli) and I switched it across to non run flat Michelin pilot super sports.
The ride on the run flats wasnt too bad - it was more that they filtered only a limited amount of the road surface / pothole shocks from the cabin - tho it wasn't as bad as the mrs old BMW 335d on 19`s and run flats.
I haven't tried a mini on smaller diameter rims - the mini salesman told me that there wasn't much difference in the ride quality between the 17s and 18s - but he was trying to sell me the car, so who knows.
In this tyre size (205/40/18) there isn't much sidewall and the difference to the run flat tyres is less than I expected - they do take the edge off the worst bumps and in my view were worth the investment,but if you were ona tight budget you might not agree. I think that the wheel alignment that I had done at the same time made a bigger difference to the way the car drives. If you have tyres with larger sidewalls I can imagine the difference would be greater.
One consideration of the 18s is that tyre choice is limited if you want to stick to the stock size - there are other option if you are prepared to go with slightly different size like a 215

New Passenger door lock (not working)
New Passenger inside door handle (came off)
New drivers side door light (fell off)
New Boot switch (not working)
New Water pump (leaking)

This was on top of normal servicing
Oh and its broken again
losing more coolant.
Would I have another? no fecking way

Brilliant car but warranty a must. The MINI insured warranty is a great product if you buy privately or from a non-MINI dealer, or after 1-year Cherished has elapsed.
I recommend the 17 wheels, lighter, cheaper tyres with more choice of brands, possibly better traction on bumby roads.
